ok...I am recording in...about 3 hours...I have a brandy new B1 & B3 mic...I figured I would use the B1 for the kick, and B3 for the snare, which I am going to place under the snare. My question is...how do I point them...do I lay then parallel to the ground (logo facing up) or straight up and down (logo facing a wall).

Your help is greatly appreciated.

They're side address mics so in this case parallel would be the place to start.

I am really sorry...but I am bit confused by what you just said...if they are side address mics...wouldn't I want the top of the mic to face the ceiling, the side of the mic to face the kick, and the bottom of the mic facing the floor? Sorry to be such a moron.

Put the Kick mic perpendicular (at a right angle) to the floor and parallel to the Kick ,with the logo facing the head, and the Snare Mic parallel to the floor and the bottom of the Snare; with the logo facing the bottom head of the Snare ____

Point the logo side to the source and you should be fine. That should be the front of the mic.

Side address means the diaphragm is on the side of the mic, not at the tip like a sm57 or most other dynamic mics.

I think Mark7 said parallel as in parallel to the source.

I think you're on the right track.

Good luck!

You are absolutely not a moron. A moron is someone who doesn't know, but doesn't have the guts to ask.

There ya go great description!

Since the B1 is a cardioid or unidirectional mic, having the front face the source is very important. If you have it pointing away it will faintly pickup the source and mostly capture reverberations.

Rock on!
