I own a Fostex VF160 multi-track recorder and I recently ordered a DBX 266XL Dual Compressor Gate. The DBX has not yet been delivered to my home yet, but I was wondering if anyone could give me pointers on using a compressor for lead vocals. Does an average amount of compression make the vocal recording sound funny or natural? I record the full range of instruments on my Fostex, drums, bass, guitar, piano, etc... but do not use any compression on any of these, but I do wish to use compression on the lead vocals, and possibly on the background vocals.
Any pointers would be appreciated.
