yes
In your opinion, whats better. im thinking probly miking an amp, most pro studios do that.

so whats your opinion?

Micing amps will always be better than digitally processed crap, in my humble opinion.

99% of the time the mic'd amp is the best sounding way to go, though sometimes a direct signal/stompbox/POD straight to the board is just what the song needs.

POD is usefull for doubling though.

Because I'm not that enthousiastic about my amp, I double some of my guitar parts (heavy rock riffs) with my POD. The blend between the two gives a natural sound.

Outlaws, a study of current studio practices will reveal that most studios mic amps all the time. You have also overlooked the possibility of doing both. I run the POD to a clean power amp, send the signal bridged to 8 ohms, to a cab, and mic the cab. There's no reason at all why using a modeler means you aren't mic'ing an amp.-Richie

studio's use it all... at some point...

amps would be first consideration (also depends on the technicians preference), but PODS have a place too. there's good reasons for using PODs, supplement tracked amps, add special effects, reamp to fix some problems, ...

a POD can be a good alternative to a mediocre amp, or if you haven't mastered micing an amp. i'm definitely not of the opinion that PODs are crap. thay can find a place, but like everything else, it's up to you. it's not always the either-or choice that gets portrayed here.

I know studios mic amps.......I was just taken back by the thread even questioning if they do. Joke...haha...;)

So... for a small home setup... does a POD XT Pro compare to the cost of a good amp, good mike and good expertise in mike positioning ??? I don't really wanna be a sound engineer just get a decent guitar sound down ???

Thinking of getting the Rack pod you see... £400 in the UK..... interested in how the amp/mike outlay evens out against the price of the rack - remembering that i'd still need to splash out on a multi effect as well as amp/mike

Cheers guys...

There's a lot of talk about "proper" mic technique for guitar amps. Guitar amps are one of the easiest things to mic, stick a mic on the speaker and play then move it around, play some more, find the postion you like and record.

I once asked Eddie Kramer how he got his sounds for Jimmy and he said he just "put a mic in front of the amp and hit record, the same way I do with most other things."

He also said that he usually uses EQ before tape, he likes to get it on the tape for how he wants it to sound, he thinks its a bit of a waste of time to try and get the sound you wanted after it's been recorded when you could have done it before...

Good things to think about...

"stick a mic up and hit record"

This of course presumes that the sound/tone coming out of the amp is already good. Many people have a hard time mic'ing a guitar amp because they don't even have the tone right for the context from the gitgo!

Okay, I can see where bad amp tone would cause a problem, but there is little you can do to make a crap amp sound good, short of get another amp. Maybe this is why I spend so much money on guitar gear?

Which then begs the question, why would you bother recording a crap amp anyways! (Use a modeller, in that case!) ;)

i think pods are fucking ace! how else can you get the overdrive guitar sound from 'my first keyboard' with an american strat!!
