I read at Harmony Central that you can get a free upgrade chip, by calling Line 6.

Just wondering, has anyone done this, and was it easy to install?

If so, what difference did it make?

I emailed Line 6, two hours later they called and told me the chip is in the mail, and it's free.

Now that's customer service!!

Mine's on the way too. I'm supposed to get it this week. From what tech support said, it's easy to do and only takes a couple of minutes.

To bad there's no upgrade to the POD XT because I really can't spend the $350 for it right now, especially since I've already got another toy being shipped as we speak. I just ordered a SansAmp Bass Driver. Actually, I was kind of considering a SansAmp Classic or even the GT2 as something to counter my POD before the XT came out.

Ditto DaveO on the $350. smackaroonies, I ain't no Rockefeller.

Still not clear on what difference this chip is going to make.

Anyway should be fun to fool around with.

Hope no soldering will be necesary, if there is, OH WELLER!!

Get it OH WELLER, hey that rhymes with OLD YELLER.

Hey, I just made you laugh, and cry in the same sentence!!

GT

Hate to disappoint you but I didn't laugh or cry. I did groan a little, but that was about it. ;)

I don't have the amp connoisseur's background to be able to tell how accurately the models actually model any given amp. But for my purposes I don't really care too much about that. I take a given amp as a guideline for the kind of sound I'll get and then I tweak until I find a variation I like. If the update helps me do that better I'll be happy.

Now, do I realllllllly expect a dramatic difference ...

I read, that the cabinet modeling, clarity, and presence are suposed to improve with the new chip. Sweet!!

They also said that the new chip cures some bugs, they do not say which bugs. I really haven't noticed any myself, with 2.0, how about you DaveO?

Sorry for the groan.

GT

what email did you send to , GT? I;m curious about this on my own pod.

Thanks,
H2H

I read the same thing when I called them. No, I haven't noticed any bugs, nor has my friend I'm writing with right now.

Will I notice the improved accuracy in the models? Probably not. I really only ordered it to cure some GAS. I was hoping that once I get the upgrade maybe I won't be tempted to go with the POD XT, especially since I was already thinking about one of the SansAmp guitar boxes.

Where did you guys find out about this? I can't find a peep on either Harmony Central or the Line6 site...

H2H,

I called Line6 at 818-575-3600 and spoke to somebody named Scott. He took care of it right away and said it would take about 2 weeks to get to me. I checked their web site and you could maybe try info@line6.com. You just need your serial number to get the upgrade.

AlChuck,

Go to harmonycentral.com type pod in search, go to page two, and it's at the top of the page.

This upgrade did seem to come of as a little known secret, weird!!

Hey, DaveO did you get your chip yet?

Well, did ya punk?

Getting a little anxious myself!

GT

Good question. As far as I know, no, not yet. But then again it's been pouring rain all day so I haven't felt like going outside to check the mail yet. Yeah, I know, ordinarily I would walked to the mailbox even in a hurricane, but ...

... my new SansAmp Bass Driver finally came yesterday and I've been in the basement most of today trying it out. I've only gotten in one day with it but so far I'd say it beats the pants off a guitar POD for bass.

I'll get out there once the rain slows down.

Got the 2.3 chip in the mail today. Came with a letter that said have a qualified tech install it, and instructions on installing it.

Qualified I'm not, but went ahead and did it myself, took maybe all of ten minutes.

You will lose any presets you have with the new chip, unless you back them up.

First thing I noticed was the sound of plugging in the guitar was different, less nasilly. This I think says it all. Smoother sound!!

Let me use it awhile and let you know.

Punk? Punk!?!?! Just how old a man are YOU that you can call ME a punk, punk?!?! :D  ;)

The chip did come yesterday and I just installed it. I'm keeping my fingers crossed here that nothing got damaged. The instructions said to insert a small flat screwdriver and gently wiggle. Well, there was no way even the smallest screwdriver I had was getting under the original EEPROM. It wasn't budging.

Then when it finally did it shot out of the socket and thank god it hit my arm only a few inches away. I hope it's not damaged (then again, if I did cause some permanent damage there might be an POD XT in my future). The new EEPROM went in pretty easily but I'll have to wait until later tonight to play it, after I put our son to bed.

The box my POD came in said 2.0 but I actually had version 2.2. I'm not sure I'll see much of a difference, but who knows? If nothing else, maybe this will curb some G.A.S. pains.

Hey DaveO,

Sorry about calling you a punk, allthough if the shoe fits.........

I have one of the older 2.0, the EEPROM read 2.0.

I didn't have as much trouble getting the old chip out as you did, sorry to hear it hit you in the arm, with the right velosity you might have ended up with a chip near your shoulder, permanantly!!

Hey your shoulder rhymes with Old Yeller, there's that laugh, cry thing again.

One thing changed for me, the secondary knob funtions can now be latched, so I don't have to hold down the tap tempo button button. I don't know if yours was allready like this or not.

I also think I notice a slight drop in overall output volume over the 2.0. Let me know what you think on this matter.

I think it does sound better overall, and that's what counts. Sounds a little more there, I think anyway. See what you think.

Keep in touch,

GT

Well I put the 2.0 chip back into my Pod.

The 2.0s output is substantially higher than the 2.3.

This is important for me since I have to run it through a Passive four in two out mixer, the old Teac four channel mixdown switch box, that I used to use with my Teac 3440 reel to reel. This box drops the volume, and since it's passive, there is no volume boost.

But the real clincher for me, was that I had a user preset that I really liked for my acoustic electric, using the 2.0 chip, and I remembered the settings. Also had a recording I had made as a reference.

Well when I put in the 2.3 chip, as hard as I tried I could not get this sound back, and worse I couldn't get it to sound as good.

Oh well, out with the new, and in with the old!!
