Plugging in "rack" components into mixer to record.

Slowing becoming un-noob.
So as of now I just have an equalizer for my rack because I'm scared to buy extras because of this...

I'm using an Alesis Multimix16 Firewire mixer to record directly to the computer and I tried hooking up my equalizer into the mixer and it worked as far as I could tell when just listening to people playing, but then we would record a track and the EQ didn't effect the recording.

So my first question is as to where do I plug in the whole 'rack' stuff, right now an equalizer, and how should I hook it up? And then is there something different because I'm using a firewire mixer to go right to the computer that will make the rack not work at all in my recordings? thanks for the help :)

The simple solution is: Record your signal as "dry" as possible, and by that I mean, record your tracks as natural as you can get them and apply EQ, Compression, etc during play back. The theory is, in my best explanation, if you get your source sound to sound the absolute best, and record THAT sound without processing. You will have much better results, and use far less EQ in the mix than if you capture a crappy signal and try to "fix it" in the mix. If that makes sense.

If you are wanting to use EQ, use it in the guitar chain. Just my two cents though.

I only get half of that. So I record what I want without trying to apply the EQ then I apply the other things during play back? And how do I do that?

And also, I'm not too concerned about getting this EQ to work or not, I'm just making sure I know how to plug everything in and make sure it works before I invest in some nice preamps and such.

Thanks
