Plug-ins (VST, DirectX, etc.) ???

Ok I want to setup a DAW on my PC. I've got everything but the sofware. I'm looking at Sonar, Cubebase, Home Studio etc. I'm not to interested in midi, just audio editing. the main thing that confusses me is all of the differant plug-ins. Some work with this, some work with that, and some work with all. What I want is the most affordable program with the most avaliable plug ins for the money. I like the UAD card which I may get in the future.

So tell me what I need to get my DAW running and burning Cd's.

P 1.8mhz
Ram 512
80gig HD
M-audio 2496 soundcard
KRK RP8's
Alesis HD24
Behringer DDX3216 mixer

PS would like something easy to get used to, but powerful.

Make me a shopping list
 
First off .... On the computer end. Get yourself another hard drive for all the audio data to stream to and from, this will save you many headaches in the future. while your at it, pick up a decent CD burner. Most any should work just fine. Then make sure DMA is enabled. If you don't know what that is check out this photo .
Software-wise, I would have to say n-Track (very easy learning curve). It's very affordable and very capable. Only $69 US for the 24 bit version. It supports DirectX and VST plugins. Granted, it doesn't come loaded with plugins but there are many good free plugins available on the net. Check out the FASoft forum and also while your at it check out Audiominds.com , which is a support site run by members of the forum. Audiominds has great info for anyone interested in computer based recording, even if you don't use n-Track. There you will also find links to sites that offer free plugins and other useful tools.

I personally use Cubase... but before that I was using Cool Edit Pro. Which is now Adobe Audition. (they are on version 1.5 now). I highly recommend this program if you need to save some bucks and want to learn the program fast. This program is the easiest recording software I have ever used and does a great job! main reason I stopped using it is because it didn't support ASIO drivers. So I upgraded to Cubase and now I am in love with Cubase. But the ASIO thing you should have a problem with.
 
Would Home Studio 2004 be a good? Can I use a UAD card with it? Which plug-ins work with Home Studio
 
I have never used that program, but if you check their website it will tell you which types it supports.,
 
Well, I'm a huge fan of Cubase SX!!!!

It's just too good to me true for the price, it's very user friendly, you'll pick it up very fast, it has great audio editing and a ton of other stuff...

This link is the academic version, so you have to be enrolled in a college to purchase it, it's cheaper and it's the 100% full version from this site (and many other sites that sell academic versions).
