I have a digi002r. im recording a ludwig accent set and the only thing that not "real" are the violins that are a sampletank L plugin.

dont be afraid to hurt my feelings. i need advice on the recording, mixing, songwriting, aranging and performance. thanks for the feedback.

The song/performance and recording itself sounds pretty solid to me, it's the mix that needs work. My comments are primarily targeted towards the vocals, IMHO, they sound too dry (the right verb will definately get it to sit better) and don't seem to gel with the music throughout the track. In some passages, the verses in particular, the vocal is drowning the music and I find that the tambourine is distracting cause it's sitting outside the mix right with the verse vox. On the production side, I'd definately slap in some backing vocals (with a harmony possibly) to bring out the chorus and to define that middle section.

My 2 cents

Best regards,
The Clit. :)

thanks CT. u may be right. i have no reverb at all on the vocals just a long delay. i detest a lot of reverb because i feel its makes it sound too 80s but i might just need a little.

any other comments???

I'm not necessarily partial to this type of tune, but I do like it. I would change out the violin for a cello, viola, or even a full string section. The violin sample doesn't seem to sound quite right for the lower notes. The upper notes are nice. Maybe add some EQ to it to bump up the lower end. Good timimg on the rest of the parts, though. I'm a point-and-click drummer, so I can't give any advice there. Maybe a little EQ there to knock out some of the bass drum's high end (around 170Hz or so).

CT seems correct on the vocals. You won't have to go overboard. Maybe throw a phaser on the vocals in that part where you have the HP filter:) Nice touch.

VOCALS TOO DRY. The autotune sounds really bad at places. I think it would be better just to record a bunch of takes and cut and paste until you get a near perfect vocal take and then use autotune VERY lightly. Vocals could probably be turned down a lot, but i'm more of a music driven mix type guy. violins turned up, and I think the replacement with a lower stringed instrument or string ensemble was a good idea. The delay is disconcerting in a few places(quieter parts, i didn't notice it at all for most of the song) but if there was reverb with the delay it might not bother me. Turning the delay way up in certain parts might make for a cool effect.

Right on. It sounds good on these pc speakers. I agree about the autotune, tho.

the auto tune is actually only in certain spots (its not left on throughout the whole song) but i guess im going to have to redo a lot of parts. i originally had the violins as violas but it was lost in the mix. it didnt mesh well with the bass and the floor-tom but ill experiment more. thanks.

Try making a duplate track of the violins, and bump it up 1 octave. Change the original track to a viola or cello and add a small amount of chorus and reverb to both. That will make them fuller and bring them out a little more. You will probably want to reduce the volume of the new octave up track to keep it from being over powering.
