ok...heres it goes....please rip this apart...and ignore the vocals in this song...it was done with a computer mic haha. this recording was done with VERY limited equipment, and new equipment has been bought ever since. i guess i'm trying to get feedback on the song, and how it all sounds for using such limited crappy equipment. i need advice esp on the drums....and what to do about the the guitars in some parts, where they tend to (clip)? is that what you call it? but yea, any help is greatly appreciated....this was my first time using a delta 1010, which was the only good piece of equipment i used...

Hey, I like your style. The guitar tone is nice and fat, what are you using there? I hear a lot of clipping when the drums come in. The drums overall are kind of iffy overall. The snare sounds like your hi tom. The kick drum is kind of lifeless. What is your drum micing setup?

drums could use some reverb and eqing. and some help with timing. the snare does not 'snape' at all. vocals sound a little distant and dead. try maybe giving the bass some mids for a little punch. nice guitar sound it sounds fat and like it will fit into most mixes pretty well. overall good try, i've heard worse...much worse. you asked us to rip this apart, and i've tried my best-i'm usually much better at tearing people and songs apart, sorry.

I pretty much agree the guitars sound good, but the drums... It's like the snare doesn't have any snares in it, also are you using any kind of dampeners on the toms? I'm just listening though computer speakers right now so I could be way off.

haha...i knew u guys would say something bout the drums..

the reason why the snare drum sounds liek that is because theres no snare thingy haha...its broken, as well as the broken skin on the bottom.

the mics we used we all terrible...except for the shure sm57 on the snare...but a EV cobalt 7 on the bass drum, 2 "pro 2" karoake mics as overheads (all into behringer mx2004)
haha yea thats the limited equip i was talking bout...the drum set is a percusion plus...and the cymbals, if u wanna call them that, are jus a bunch of various broken, cracked, pieces missing and hanging off cymbals....and as for the drummer, he's only been playing for 2-3 months...so i give him props for that...

as for the guitar, sm57 mic'd up...boss metal zone pedal into marshall mg 80 combo...using a squier strat with seymour duncan hot rails...n that was eq'ed like crazy...but the new guitar rig is a mesa triple rect...but for some reason, i can't get as much presence as the old guitar recording...maybe it was jus the eq-ing i did...

and yes the vocals are terrible...they sound a lot better with the Oktava MC-012-01's we got...like i said, that was done with a COMPUTER mic haha (labtec)....i had to record it from far away, or it would be popping like crazy.

but anyway, thanks for all of the feedback, i appreciate it all...
but now how yo i get rid of the clipping?? or do u jus have to be more careful while recording??

how about how much should i be charging for a recording AT LEAST that good? (i have made some improvement since)

The vocals sound pretty good for being recorded on a computer mic. The snare ruins the recording quality for me though, maybe you could run it through a trigger? The song itself is okay. Sounds like many bands ala Starting Line, Midtown. Nothing amazing, but good for the style.

yea well the snare wasnt really a snare...but any ideas about how much i should charge?

how much would u expect to pay for a recording like this...
???

nothing..

I would expect that a recording like this would be free with renting any rehearsal space..

you kinda jumped the gun did cha? we were wondering what you'll pay for this boards recomendations first, there's hunderds of similar songs on mp3.com with "ahem" better mastering, when you master the tune then ask for a price, right now, heh... no comment, you said rip it apart so don't cotton pony over it...

the guitar is worth at least a buck or two :) but as ebay has shown us all, you can sell anything today... peace.

Sorry my friend but this isn't quite up "chraging" status. Keep plugging though. A few more mics and some more experience will help.

so what do u think needs to be improved the most?? (besides vocals)...and what can i do exactly to fix it?

As a cheat, I'd auto-tune lead and double it. Perhaps run it through a mild chorus to thiuncken it a bit and distract the listener from the performance.

Of course there is very little low end in the track. Adn you know you need to fix the drums.

What I call BS is the cry about bad mics. I have used the crappiest mics and got a VERY good drum sound.

When I was getting trained, I was taught make CRAP sound good. That means..... (drum roll)

learn how the mics hear, take time in mike placement to get the best out of the mike, etc..

Overall the track is decent. I'd make those minor adjustments and do a better job in the mix and you have a nice club Demo. Think SPACE when Mixing and you can have a pretty nice sounding track.

Remember the rule, make something bad into something good. The MOST important aspect is starting with a decent Track. The musicianship is not the worse....so You have a good start.

in defense to the cry...remember that the drumset was a Percusion plus (shitty) along with the shitty mics, and then a very inexperienced drummer...

but yeah, thanks for your comments...i appreciate your help..but what do you mean about think SPACE? i'm still new at this..

thanks to everyone who have gave it a listen..

also, now the issue of crappy mics are gone =)
i will be using shure SM 57's for all toms and oktava mc012-01's for the overheads...

and about recording guitars...would u recommend putting a SM57 up to the speaker and oktava a few feet behind that when miking a cab?
