I'm recording a male tenor vocal, and have tried the Rode NT1a. I'm not sure it's a good fit, and it seems very sibilant. The ess's and eff's are jumping out and slapping my momma. I want something better for around 300-500 bucks. Anyone have any suggestions?

Shure SM7
Audio Technica 4047 or 4050 or 4040
Shure KSM 44
Marshall 77
Studio Projects T3

I know this may be a little bit out of your price range BUT.... I LOOOOOOOVE the warmth and crisp sound that I get from my M Audio Sputnik. It's amazing. Also it may jump out and slap your momma if your using a CHEAP preamp.

What kind of preamp are you using?

I use a MOTU Traveler with my M Audio Sputnik = Amazing

Your microphones quality is only as good as your preamps quality in most cases.

I have to second the list above with the AT4047...and the Shure KSM44.

go on youtube and use the model names as a keyword and listen to a few vocal tracks with the 4047...Ive MS miced vocals using one in tandem with the KSM44 in omni...it works.

the dbx263a is great for any sibbilence issues you might be having.

I'm using the preamps in my MOTU 8pre, but I also have a mackie VLZ3 preamp mixer and an art tube mp with a non-stock tube (can't remember what I put in it, but it sounds pretty good, nice and warm)

I'm really considering the SM7B, but will I be able to drive it with my preamps listed? I hear it needs a lot of gain.

Ya you'd be fine doing that! And that is the microphone michael jackson used to record most of the thriller album! Great mic! I've never had personal exp. with it but i've only heard good things. Make sure you research everything before you buy it and that it's what YOU want! And alotta stores like guitar center and sam ash do price matches to online companies. So make sure you get the best price as well. Possibly a Rodes NTK?! Have you checked that mic out? It's a pretty decently priced Tube mic that you will give you some nice warmth in your price range... and again... ive heard nothing but good things.

Why does MJ get mentioned all the time with the SM7...Id much rather listen to Led Zeppelin...Bad Company...or Pearl Jam stuff...they used it too...besides the only reason they used one on MJ was he had a problem making body noises while tracking vocals...he just couldnt stand still...so the proximity effect of the SM7 came in handy...but his vocals didnt sound even near up to par with Robert Plant or Paul Rogers...its like saying that because Madonna poses with a LesPaul onstage and knows 2 chords doesnt mean she should be lumped in with Jimmy Page:rolleyes:

The SM7 makes tons of sense...it kills several birds with one stone too...mics bass drums better than most mics designed for that pourpose...use it where you might an sm57 and its more prominant.

I Don't think that NTK Is a good option for a Tenor Because The NTK is a Brighter Mic.I'll Recommend The SM7 or AT 4047.Even 4050.

I only mention Mike because when you think legend... or great artist... Your going to have a top 10 with Mike in it... and when you think that, wow... that person made a whole album with that ONE microphone.... It must be something. Its cool to know also ;)

I know when the man wants a new mic.. so be it and all :D
But just curious, seems your describing very top stuff, the mic apparently bumps' pretty hard there, but likely there all pretty directional up there. What happens if you were to rotate the mic 5 or 10 degrees?

Yeah...but albums like Led Zeppelin 4 have enjoyed steady airplay and was ahead in sales up till 2 months ago...and are just 10 times better....and was still done with the same shure mic.

It was a go to mic for alot of classic rock artists that were viable...MJ sounded more like a fork stuck in a garbage disposal.:p
