I just bought a Technics SL-QD33 direct drive turntable. This unit has a straight tonearm, a fairly heavy plinth, and is factory-adjusted for 1.25g tracking force and anti-skate. Neither parameter appears to be manually adjustable. I bought the new turntable for two reasons:

(1) So Lt. Bob won't make fun of me for having a lightweight turntable with an S-shaped tonearm. :laughings:

(2) My other Technics unit has to warm up for a bit (at least a whole album side) before the pitch will settle in. If anyone knows the cause of that or a possible solution, please let me know.

I was very pleased with the Shure cartridge someone recommended here awhile back, but unfortunately I can't use it with this unit because it's a 1/2" mount cartridge.

Thanks,
Jim

Aw, come on!

Audio Technica SLT96e,... if you can find it.
SLT95e or SLT92e, more likely to find if you look.
I looked on Google, saw SLT88e come up.

I have an old Technics SL-6, one of the first straight line tracking programmable TT's from the 80s.
Think "close and play" record player. Well over 10 years ago my lil one broke the stylus off it. At the time SLT96e wasn't available so I replaced it with an SLT92e. which was readily available and inexpensive. Got it at Fry's Electronics, got 2 at the time for good measure. More recently I went scouting for a replacement stylus for the SLT96e, which I've had in a box since then. SLT92e is a fine cartridge, and TT issues have been back burner'd for a long time now.

There aren't a ton of P-mount upgrades as compared to standard carts, but Grado and Audio Technica both sell a range of them, and Ortofon has one or two P-mount models.

They'll range in price from about 50 bucks to around 250 on the high end, but I wouldn't spend that much on a P-mount.

P-mount 'tables do not usually have any manual adjustments and the cartridges are considered plug & play.

Good stuff!

Mine's still up on top of the rack. Had the same record on it for the last 10 years. Haha.
