Quiet is the new Loud
Question - what software (DAW) are you using to record in to? Are you recording rap vocals to pre-made beats or are you making the beats as well?
Generally speaking it's much easier and, to some extent safer, to add effects like EQ or compression once you've recorded the vocals. So, as chili and steen suggested, you're probably best off leaving the EQ pots in the middle so it's not applying any EQ when you're actually recording and then use your DAW software to make any EQ adjustments. How you EQ it is dependent on what you feel needs adjusting but, again as steen suggested, if you're finding the sound to muddy/tubey then it may be worth turning down some of the lower mid frequencies and/or turning up some of the higher frequencies
