I got it.
Hey the P4PE board is an excellent choice. I own one.
Also the WD with the 8mb buffer is also a good choice. I own 2.
The delta66 is also a good choice.
Dont know about toshiba Drives.
Round IDE cables are sweet.
WIN XP is a great choice.
Everything else looks great.
I see no problems with that build.
You will want to disable the onboard sound on the ASUS board.

Looks good, but I'd change the following:

-Seagate 80GB instead of WD
-Lucent Modem instead of Creative
-Nvidia based Video instead of ATI

I didn't see any text, but I would advise against the Presonus TubePre, it isn't worth the money. I think an Audiobuddy would be a better buy then one of the noisy Presonus pres.

Here's the text for those who can't see the attachment:

I just bought the WD800JB and am wondering why you feel he should switch to the Seagate? The reviews of the WD were excellent, and it is also rated as being very quiet.

Cost=$80 ( newegg.com )

I've seen way more WD drives fail then any other, although Fujitsu is coming close these days. Good they got out of the IDE market.

It may not have any problems at all, and if it does, it's easy to replace.

Just my personal preference based on experiences.

Noise should be a priority (besides compatibility/stability) when building a DAW unless the pc is going to be in a different room or in a soundproof cabinet.

Get a zalman silent powersupply, zalman silent cpu cooler and seagate drives instead of WD. WD drives are not the quietest, seagate are. You dont need the extra speed of the WD and you definitely dont want the noise.

www.silentpcreview.com has lots of info on keeping your pc quiet.

www.storagereview.com has noise measurements of hard drives.

Indeed, www.storagereview.com is exactly what I used to make my decision. Performance was better than the Seagates, heat was less, and noise was very close, and I haven't seen any indications that the 'caviar' series have any failure issues differing from any other manufacturers, addmittedly my last drive from 3 years ago was a SCSI Seagate, but it appears that WD may have addressed any failure issues that set them apart from Seagate.

Well, that's where Ghost comes in handy! Wish me luck and thanks again.

Ahh, I think I see where I may be off, I was comparing with the IV, the difference between the WD and the Seagate V is probably significant, we'll see how it sounds!:

The Seagate Barracuda ATA V (120 GB ATA-100) = 37.8

Seagate Barracuda ATA IV (80 GB ATA-100) = 41.3

Western Digital Caviar WD800JB (80.0GB ATA-100) - 45.0

Here is a link to all of the drives and how they rate for noise:

Well, as my primaqry goal is low noise, it looks like I might be investing in a 'SilentDrive' enclosure:

http://www.quietpcusa.com/acb/showdetl.cfm?&DID=8&Product_ID=1&CATID=1

We'll see how it sounds.

I'm also planning on going with the Zalman for power and CPU cooling.

Interesting that the WD site states these specs for the WD800JB:

Acoustics
Idle Mode 2 35 dBA average (2)
Seek Mode 0 3 39 dBA average (3)
Seek Mode 3 3 37 dBA average (3)

Warranty Period 3 years

(2) No audible pure tones.
(3) Random seek at a rate of 26 seeks per second.

-----------------------------------

Well, perhaps I didn't do enough research, the Seagates do appear to be superior in the low sound ratings. Here's a site dedicated to low noise that I hadn't seen before, and they use only the Seagates:

Well, I need to get a second drive anyway, as I intend to either do Raid1 for backups or just use the second drive for pure storage (audio and/or Ghost images), so I could get a smaller Seagate for the main OS and apps. ;-)
