Ive been in live bands all my life, and using studios with other people at the desk....but since the split of my current band i put together a small studio set up in my room to try some different ideas before starting another band.

Awesome! Really impressive composition and very nicely put together sounds, love the variety of sounds from your voice, I thought the bass was to much to the fore on quiet man.
I'd buy it!
 
I like this, but everything is distorted, which gives it a low-res feeling, which I don't think best this song can be.

I quite like some of the panning, but am also often annoyed by it, especially the radical pan on the guitar at the beginning. The presence of the vocal also seems to get weaker during the louder/busier sections.

I'll throw in my two cents.

These compositions are absolutely beautiful. I love how you're not limiting yourself to traditional singer/songwriter type material. I hear a lot of diffent influences in your work (i.e alternative, punk, screamo :) ). This is some of the best original work I've heard. Nice job.

There are however, a couple things that caught my attention. The sound of the kit felt a little out of place on Muggers, Lovers, Liars, and Beggers. It feels a bit too "spaced out". I'm not saying it's completely conspicuous, but it's just an observation. Also, all the songs could use a bit more drive from the kick drum and a little more low end from the bass, particularly on some of the "harder" songs.

Exellent job overall, though. Keep it up.
 
Great compositions, Jason. I reckon some of the distorted sounds were an artistic decision, am I right? For that reason I think they work - Radiohead often do something similar with their recordings and it can really add to a track, when done well.

Are you playing everything on these recordings? If so I'm extremely impressed at your versatility. :eek: I agree about the drums on the last song. I think it's the fault of the bass drum which has a hard, wide, room sound that rumbles around your ears too distractingly; a drier, warmer kick would make the song more intimate sounding.

Bloody brilliant, though - excellent singing. :D
 
I listened to long live the quiet man.

At first I didn't care for the distorted bass, but after a while I changed my mind. I'd take the reverb off of it though.

I liked the distorted guitar on the right side.

Good singing.

The vocals get a bit covered in the chorus.

There's a little "clicky" sound on the drums that is noticeable during the verses. I can't hear it in the chorus.
 
I listened to quiet man, overall real nice job, my only nit is the vocal levels, too low. Way to low in the chorus and barely passable in the verses. Just my 2 cents. Good work and welcome to HR.
 
Nice arrangements. The bass is a little overpowering a lot of the time, and the vocals are quieter than I'd like. I really like Lovers, liars etc. Your voice is really versatile, I wouldn't burry it as in some of the songs. Overall good!

Muggers, Lovers, Liars, and Beggers. Drums were hot in spots. Great tune/performance/mix otherwise.

Yes i played the bass, guitar, drums and did vocals on my own... but I had the luxury of recording the drum kit via midi to correct my timing errors of which there were many!! I wouldn't make it as a live drummer!

The muggers, liars etc track was my first proper attempt at a home recording, I agree with your comments on this..and tbh im really not happy with the mix.

Lots of friends have suggested I mix the vocals in too low on my songs, I guess that comes with mixing your own vocals?, in time perhaps Ill bring em up a little.

Yes the distorted sounds were there to create a slightly low fi, seedy feel to the song.

First off, I listened to all 4 and thought they were BRILLIANT. Lovin' it, sounds like a big label production almost. Were yu using EZ Drummer in the last one?
 
yes Chicken Stomp, EZ drummer was used in all 4 tracks, I have the nashville kit as well as the standard... I love the nashville kit!! thanks dude
 
Sweet stuff. Great songwriting, great sound. (I'm jealous!) Also-great job using the stereo field to create big, wide mixes where everything is still distinctly there in its own space!

Well if you're faking it--keep faking it the same way! Sounds to me like beyond great songs, you've got a good ear for mixing as well.

Thanks man--sad thing is, that's the last decent piece I wrote/recorded. And I've built a whole studio since then! Sad how the "have to's" in life crowd out the "want to's." :)
 
I enjoyed your tracks. I'll echo that I like the variety in the tracks and you're not really limiting yourself to a specific genre. Helana Hellcart was great; my only small gripe would be that the vocals could come up a bit, especially in the verses.
