Please I Beg For Help!!,its Only Recording Through One Speaker Why ???

BASICALLY

i go to record and it only records the top line which means
its just recording as if it was all pand to the left

ive checkd all levels and there all equal

also for some reason when i go to record whilst a song is playing
on track one , it starts to record it , rather then just record my voice

why is this ??

please please help ! :(

You are using Stereo input for recording .
That’s correct if you want to record stereo instrument or whatever stereo input.
Something is wrong with your connection.
Your left input is connected properly so you get it recorded on left side but your right input does not get any signal.
So you have to figure it out your self or tell us what card, what cables, plugs etc are in use.

I guess, you are using a mono cable for stereo recording but it’s too early to say….

2.
Check routing on your card.
You have to actually tell Cool Edit what are going to record.
In your case Cool Edit records digital signal which comes out from your card.
This is called Recording of “What you hear” on some SB Live cards mixers.
You need to check your MIC input for recording to record your voice.

In the worst case you are having bleeding problems.
Check “Sticky” on the top of this board to read about this.

This is how my device settings are set, in this exact order on cool edit,

wave out - realtek HD audio

wave in - realtek HD

midi out - microsoft GS wavetable SW synth
then underneth it
for the SMPTE out put - microsoft GS wavetable SW synth

midi in SMPTE slave device - Midi Mapper

Ext controller - None
Volume increment (db) - 0.5


And here's how i have set the windows volume control up :

1st i set mixer device to output i click microphone to boost
then click it to mute for it makes some kind of feedback noise
then i go to device mixer and set it to input and it sets it as recording.

and like i say i get that problem whare i try to record on cool edit
and just records through one side.

Note :ive noticed on my old computer i had 2 options of microphone boost and i remeber having to just change that and it used to record fine through both speakers.

could this be the real problem ? , me not haveing the 2 boosts ?


do you think you could direct me to a program that may work better
with the sound card i have ? My sound card is Real tek High definaition audio

sorry..

as for the cable

iam using an stereo adapter on the end of the mic

its like a jack adaptor

and just makes it smaller to fit into mic port

and its its got the 2 rings on it to show its stereo

You should choose EITHER the left or the right recording input in CEP's track controls section, this will tell CEP to record a MONO track that can then be panned wherever you want it, the default for this setting is usually the stereo input option and leaving it this way tells CEP to record a stereo track, but as you are recording a mono source it ends up on one half of a stereo track.

Double click on the little speaker icon next to the clock on your taskbar, this will open up the windows playback volume mixer, select "options", then recording, this will change it to the windows recording mixer, (it looks pretty much the same as the playback mixer but is actually a seperate mixer), make sure to select only the actual input that you are plugged into as your recording source, it usually defaults to having "wave out", or "wave", or "stereo mix" selected as the recording source and will record ALL sounds coming out of the computer speakers when set this way.

now its a case of


its recording whatever is playing @ the same time

i need it to record sepratly

basically how its supose to

so iam a bit stuck , its recording thru both speakers now but
jus still records what evers playing....

rather then seperate , record layers
 
I am no expert but I did notice something you said about the adapter that didn't sound right. it sounds like you are using a stereo headphone adapter instead of a mic adapter. I don't know if this makes a difference since most mic's (that I have used) are mono and not stereo.
so I would check to see if the computer is recognizing your mic the way you have it plugged in. just use the windows sound recorder to test it.

if it is working properly, check to see if you have the right input selected for recording in CEP.
the way I do it is to open CEP and click the "options" tab on the top bar then click on "windows recording mixer" which will basicly open the same control panel that was mentioned earlier. then make sure that "microphone" is selected as the input source.
if there is no "microphone" option on the screen, click on the "options" then "properties" which will open up a list on what to show. make sure the "microphone" is checked and then it should be displayed in the "windows recording mixer" panel.
I know this is very basic but I just don't know how familular you are with the "windows recording mixer" panel. I went through this when I started working with CEP but had to figure it out by trial aned error.
btw if the "wave out mix" is selected, it will record anything that is playing through your speakers. I constantly have to change the selection depending on what I am trying to do.

So you are trying to record your voice using MIC input.
Why would you like to have it stereo? Some cards do that but they actually record the same signal to two channels.
That’s not stereo! That’s 2 x MONO.
You can achieve stereo only by using two mics. Many camcorders have two mics and they record in stereo but I don’t see the point if those two mics are located so close to each other.
OK, They are turned to different direction so bla bla bla.

Back to the theme:
You should use LINE IN input if you are recording audio from synthesizer or mini disc, whatever...
Line in input is Stereo for sure. Mic input doesn’t have to be.
Do, record your voice MONO
If you REALLY want it in stereo and your card doesn’t make it right for you so do next:
Record your voice as you usually do.
You’ll get a stereo track with right channel empty.
Double click on it and it will open in Edit view.
Do highlight your left channel of the track and choose COPY ( on Menu)
Now, highlight your right channel and choose PASTE
Save it.

Still, there is no point of doing this.
You should record vocal mono!
