Please Help!!!

I just bought the Cool Edit Pro so I can master my own song. I want to get rid of the hiss and also I want to brighten up the sound and make the whole song louder. And some parts of the song gets louder than the other parts, I want to know how can I put it in equal volume. Do any of you know how I can do this using Cool Edit.
 
Wow... that alot of questions girl...

Instead of writing a bunch of things out here for you, I recomend you read the "Help" files in CEP itself. You can get answers to all your questions listed, in there.

Type three different things into the help feature of Cool Edit:

dynamic processing

dynamic EQ

hiss

Read everything there and play around with it. Come back and ask more precise questions.
 
If you go here and download the mastering guide .pdf document, it'll give you a good idea of what you need to familiarize yourself with. Though its written to be used with Ozone (a series of mastering plugins from Izotope), the principles are universal and can be applied in Cool Edit Pro.

Check this out as well.

The most important piece will be to experiment, and to read the help files :D

Ok I clicked on the Dynamic processing and Dynamic EQ, I still don't know how to make the whole song sound louder. Can someone please tell me what am I suppose to click on the Dynamic processing and EQ to boost the whole sound?
 
Girlnezz- patience, friend. Mastering is not merely an act of pressing a button and your tune is cd-ready. Mastering, like playing the piano, mixing, or ping-pong, is a skill that must be learned and developed. You need to know and understand your tools and what they do to the sound. Then, with a little creativity, you can hopefully achieve the mix you're looking for.


But, if all you want to do is make your tune louder, use Amplify to increase the overall dB level until it clips to your hearts content

Or, go: "EFFECTS--->AMPLITUDE-->HARD LIMITING" and put "-0.5" in the first box (note the decimal point) and put, hell, I dunno...try "6" in the second box and you'll be amplifying the tune and not clipping. If it sounds funky (in a bad way), then put a smaller number in that second box. If it's still too quiet, put a bigger number in there.

I just got a new analog mastering compressor...so yes, I'm willing to overuse and abuse its powers :D

Just remember, you get what you pay for, lol.

Seriously, I won't make it worse.
 
Keep in mind...all you'll have is a decent sounding mp3 file. You'll have to make the changes yourself to the original .wav file to get the full "sonic brilliance."

Since this is a CEP forum, and since you probably don't have a mastering compressor, I'll do everything I can in cool edit, and I'll take notes.

I need to get the file today, though. So link me up, Scotty!
 
Oh, and I have to go out for a bit, but if you can convert the tune to an mp3 (the higher the bitrate, the better), then you can set up a free account at www.nowhereradio.com and upload 15mb for free. Depending on how long the song is, you should be able to encode it at up to 320 and still have it be under 15MB. If not, try the VBR setting in CoolEdit

A three-minute mp3 is usually about 3 MB in size. That's a pretty big email attachment, and would take a long time to download probably.

What most people do is set up a page on an mp3 board like nowhereradio, and put their mp3s there. An alternative is to burn a CD of your tracks and mail it to him.

It's a vintage 1970's era EMT Mastering compressor (big gray box from Germany that looks like it fell off the side of a cliff, lol). Right now, I'm totally into abusing its awesome powers by overcompressing the crap out of all of my mixes, but at least I KNOW that I'm doing this, lol...and I'm saving all of the original files for when I get some perspective. It really does help take the "digital edge" off of recordings.
