I'm using a tascam 1641 interface

But i want to have better pre amps, so my question is: is it possible to have external pre amps, and use it with my tascam 1641 evne though my interface has already built in pre amps?

would it work?

With out looking, yes most likely. All it needs is 'line in'. Some times 'line in' is the same path as the pre amp XLR but just padded down. Whether that matters- don't know.
Best way to find out is to look at their signal flow block diagram.

By the look of that unit you could use the line ins.

What preamp are you looking to get?

I'd advise that in general, you avoid all in one preamp/comp/EQ units. You'll more than likely not like any of the three. Buy stand alone pres, comps and EQs. The ART is one of the best budget preamps. I can recommend it from personal experience.

So what's the best way to interface a standalone preamp with your computer?

(given that the standalone preamp has no usb/ firwire etc)

So does it matter what soundcard you have at the end of the day since it's just an interface? You would't be using its preamps if you are using a standalone preamp...you would use its digital converters I suppose.

And yes, the converters-
Which is the point at which you start seeing digi-sound cards and 'seperates' as more flexible, and future proof.
