I am ready to purchase a small recording setup. This is what I am looking to buy:

DAW: Echo Layla 24
MIC: AKG SolidTube
Compressor/MIC PRe: ??

My two questions are:
1. What do you think about the mic choice?
2. What do you recommend for a compressor/preamp around 500$? I was looking at Joe Meek one which actually had a card you could get that would keep the output at 24 bit digital. What do you think?

BTW>> I am so glad that I found this "bbs"!

TIA

Can anyone say: "A pair of Shure SM-57s for less than $100US each, an Oktava MC-012 The Sound Room only for $230US, RTT M1/M3 from The Sound Room only for $350US."?

That's my recommendation for mics with a SolidTube price range budget.

I'm sure someone else can help you on the pre/comp.

Thanks for the advice on the RTT stuff. Looks interesting, but if I am going to be recording vocals, wouldn't I want a bigger diaphragm?

I noticed that fullcompass has bought old stock Groove Tube mics and are selling for cheap. Any experience with those, or should I stick to the mc012?

Thanks again

Also, has anyone heard the Coles ribbon mics?

Thanks again

That's why you buy the RTT M1/M3 33mm large diaphagm cap to go along with you're MC-012.

I think older Groove Tubes are are nice mics if already have a few large diaphragm condensers; but not as a first one.

And Coles 4038 will is a VERY NICE mic. Also look into the Royer R-121. www.royerlabs.com But I recommend buying at least one large diaphragm condenser before a ribbon.
