Hi folks,
....im a newbie here, and thats gonna be obvious in a second. Does anyone have a preference for a cd ripper/encoder, etc. I know, I know,...this has been covered before but i just wanna be clear. I wanna be able to rip from my cd's (personal home recordings/ studio projects), and have the Mp3's actually sound as good as they do on the cd's. Im not really all that well versed on bit rates, so any education would be much appreciated. Are the Mp3's that one would rip on one of these software programs good enough to use for collaborative purposes? Any help would be very much appreciated....thanks, Mike

I've used AudioCatalyst and it works pretty well. Now I use the ripper/encoder in SoundForge5. Both work pretty well. If you do a search on this site you'll find a lot of good info. There are some free one out there you can download that are real nice.

thanks track rat.....
Do you know if the quality on these available ripper/encoders are good enough to do collaborations with? I want to be able to rip something from one of my cd's and email it to a friend to download and load into his recording situation. ...feasable?

Well, the problem with any MP3 regardless of which encoder/ripper you use is, it's compressed, meaning a lot of data is tossed away so it'll never sound quite as good as the original CD.

MONKEY AUDIO!!!!

This is a zip-type compression utility that is optimized for .wav files so it gets amazing ratios while remaining 100% uncompressed upon unpacking.

I've heard lots of collaborations using mp3s. Clearly not as cool as mixes done with real .wav files delivered on CD. But definitely workable, especially with 192Kbps and above done at highest quality on a good encoder.

sonusman turned me on to the Monkey as a way to squeeze 24/96 .wav files onto a CDR.
