Hey guys,

I was wondering if you could help me out with a project I have in college. I have to design a hypothetical business for my Entrepreneurs class. Basically I was thinking of implementing a hypothetical dediacted mixing/collaboration containing:

Its own online database for samples
Loops
Collected freeware.
Basically as a place to connect musicians with msuicians, singers with songwriters, and unsigned bands with unsigned bands.

It isn't something I would ever pursue, and the MP3 mixing clinic is the only place I need, but seeing as I HAVE to do a project on something, I figured I'd try and make it to do with home recording. So with that in mind if you could do my poll, it'd be great. I'm not spamming, and if anyone has a problem with this just PM me and I'll close this down.

So...without further ado....

I'd need to see further info, but I most likely would not if there is a fee involved, simply because I'm not good enough. But I wouldn't say no, because it is an intriguing idea, and with the right circumstances, I might give it a go.

I enjoy the collabs here, and I know there is a collab site out there that deals specifically with this type of thing. So I voted yes......Hope you get and "A" :)

Cool thanks man! All feedback is appreciated, whether it's positive or negative, it'll all be used at some point!

Cool, do you know the name of the other site?

I voted "need more info". If your question is would I subscribe - as in "pay" - for an online collab/mix service, then my answer would be no. I play all my own instruments and my stuff is pretty straightforward anyway, so I personally don't need loops or samples. The freeware idea is cool for plug-ins and whatnot, but you can get those off the net anyway. The 'community' aspect of it is a nice idea, but again, that can be found all over the net for free already. So basically you'd have to come up with a site that really kicks ass and has a whole lot to offer to compete with sites like this and other similar sites. I think your basic intentions and ideas are good, but I don't know how feasible it is with the internet the way it currently is.

I don't think I would subscribe (this place is all I need too). I can see how it would attract others, especially those that are new to the whole recording thing.

If the site hosted the tracks of the collaborations, that would make it more attractive. That would allow multiple variations from single projects. If someone wanted to, they could just try their hand at mixing other styles, or take a project in a different direction by adding their own tracks. Maybe some kind of project tree system would be helpful in keeping things organized. To keep the sites download traffic down, membership would be required, each member would be limited to download a track only once, and the tracks could be in mp3 format (high bit rate of course). Just some ideas for you.

Yeah that is a good idea. Have a section where people can post tracks in zipped folders or whatever so other can access them.

I beg your Pardon!

Hypothetically i think its a great idea.

It seems that a paying site would deter alot of you. This was something I was thinking of too. i think it would have to be free to begin, to gather a market share....maybe as the site developed and the amount of work uploaded by people grew, you could charge a fee to new subscribers.

Also, if it were a pay site, people would need to think they are getting something. If it had it's own storage, that could make a huge difference. A small fee that mostly goes towards storage would be worth something to alot of people.

Sure I get you. That'd be one of the main concerns then, bandwidth. good point.

I'm not answering yet, but I will say this. If it was free and had guest articles, a links data base and such I would subscribe. I've not done much collaberation stuff. I tend to get to busy with my own crud;)

I personally would approach it from the angle of making your money mostly off advertising.

Good Luck

Yep, need more info too, although I can see where you are going with this. I've done quite a few collaborations. Mostly with artists that I've met through the internet, on other boards and such.

Would I pay for such a service, no. There are to many ways to get wav files back and forth already, so storage wouldn't even be needed. It would be redundant. All you really need is a board similar to this one for the contacts of the collaborations.

The only way that I see where you could make money is by advertising on the site. That and maybe donations.

I have a few of my own ideas about revenues, subscriptions aside. When you think about YouTube that was a media sharing community that google bought for what, $160 million?

TelePaul,
Happy to help with an assignment. I'd need more info & would be reluctant because:
a) I like them informality of the MP3 Mixing Clinic;
b) I'm reluctant to offer my own skills as they're below par (though not silly enough to say no to an offer of help from someone enthusiastic &/or more capable)
&
c) I don't have the spare cash, at present, to pay subs.

The comments about storage & bandwith are spot on. The only downside I've come across on the MP3 clinic is trading MP3s for collabs rather than full wave etc.
Working in 2 ongoing but long distance collaborations at present I've found that MP3s are great for sketches (though I had some great finished results with high quality MP3s from a certain very talented drummer who also records things brilliantly). Wave files are fantastic but there needs to be commonality of software prog they're going into to get a real 2 way going even when posting CDs of tracks & finally I've reverted to swapping 4 track tapes so that the stuff is analogue, format isn't too difficult & the end results can be uploaded to PC for polishing.
Hope I haven't gone too far off track.

Thanks alot Ray! Okay so the main detriment is cost. I'll have to remember that! I hear what you're saying about being reluctant to contribute, but my mixing skills are worse than anyone else here but my enthusiam often gets the better of me! Sometimes it's cool to just have somehting to mix and practice on.
