Hi guys,

This is my very first post on this forum, I am so happy I have found it, an invaluable source of information!

Please can I ask some advice my current set up is:

recording software : Logic Studio 8
sound interface : Presonis Firepod

Current Mics: Shure PG 56 x 4 and the Kick that came in the pack

Overheads: AKG C1000 x 2

I am not very happy with the snare sound using the PG56, shall I replace with a SM57?

I think I have a AKG D112 that I can use for the kick which is good, which mics would be good for me to use for snare, toms and hihat?

Many thanks in advance!

Neil

Hey dude...
Welcome. :D

Just goin by what I use...

I use the Recorderman/ Glyn Johns Techniques. Kind of a combo of both.

try the 57 or an Audix I5 for the snare.

D112 on kick will be fine...

Don't know anything about the C1000's except I might have heard that they're pretty bright. That might wreak some havoc on your cymbals.
Maybe not...give em a shot.

I "never" have to mic my hi hat. I get plenty from the OH's.

If you want to close mic toms, try out the PG56's you have on em. Be careful of placement for phase.

Once in a great while, I'll mic the toms if it's a song with lotsa fills. Most of the time my toms are caught pretty well just with OH placement. I try to get the sound of the whole kit soundin good with just the OH's and bring the close mics (toms, kik snare) up in the mix blended to taste.

Luck man.

Hi Kel,

Many thanks for your reply, I will take your advice and get a cheap SM57 to wack on the snare, what overheads do you use? it seems people on here absolutely hate the C1000s's!

Also I notice that peope don't like the PG56 mic's but I am going to see what sort of sound I get with them before I go mad and spend loads more,

Thanks again for your advice

Neil
