Hello all. I have a problem. I just can't think anymore. I have tried 13 different amps...I have tried going direct...I have tried mics-mic positioning-everything. My guitars sound SOOOOO fake I can't stand it anymore!

I am recording on a Tascam 2488. My acoustic and vocals sound SO real like I am playing it live(maybe even BETTER)...then when the song kicks in...FAKE!!! Any suggestions?

Get another guitar player.

I am sorry?........

Are you putting down my guitar playing? You don't even know me.

A little humor there likely..
So more info though. There's a million ways to go, figure a least a few ought to be working. What/where is it missing? Maybe context, soundstage, what?

All of my distorted guitar sounds sound like I am playing a million miles away from the microphone. I have re-positioned...I have gone from a AM57 to a condenser...All of that.

My main sound is a Mesa Triaxis into a 2:90 power amp w/ a BBE sonic maximizer in there, Marshall 1960A 4X12 cab (tried ALL speakers). I am not using a $20 25 watt Crate...ya know?

I have tried my Peavey XXX...I have tried my Randall...I have tried my 3 Marshalls...I have tried other guitars, pickups, cables,

Distorted guitars are tough. Just keep experimenting.

Use less distortion.

And put some mid in it fer Christsakes!!!!!

Sounds like your mic's might be picking sound reflections in your room. Perhaps a little more speaker isolation or room treatment is needed.

The cab is isloated.

I use almost no gain and PLENTY of mids. I guess back to the drawing board!

Eric

ALOT Less distortion if you are recording distorted guitars.
You shouldnt have a problem if you are experimenting.
The only things I can think is the pre amps in your recorder or that you just dont have the ability to record guitars.

Guitars are one of the trickiest to get right.

Or don't post a clip.

The only way I can post a clip is if I completely master the song and then burn it to disc then upload it. My recorder won't let me do it any other way. I don't really want to go through all of that right now

Eric

you'll be surprised what you can do with the knobs on your amp and some EQing.

im assuming you are getting that digital sound... are you running through a guitar pedal? if you are, the settings on the pedal will make a world of difference in trying to sound real and not digital. If you want a heavy tone, i reccommend turning the TONE down and the DISTORTION up... as you use less distortion, you can use more tone... this simple rule usually helps me from getting really digital guitar sounds.

just gotta keep trying everyone on this board knows exactly what you're goin through... you need patience and the resolve to keep fucking around for hours until it sounds perfect

and get a new guitar player LOL LMAO ROFLOL LOLZ LIKE WHATEVA

Well, to be honest, Eric, there's not much anybody can really say unless or until the track is heard. Regardless of the number of responses to this thread so far, no one here knows what "fake sounding" actually means, or what you mean by "a million miles away". It's not so much your fault; like someone once said around here a long time ago, typing about audio is like dancing about architecture :). The doctors here can't really diagnose the patient unless they can see the patient.

And there is no need to completly master or burn anything. The 2488 has USB out to your PC and is designed to use that for clip archiving. You should be able to export your individual tracks to the PC as unmastered WAV, convert to MP3 on your PC, and post on lightning or Soundclick for download.

But when you say that you've tried everything on the gear end, I gotta wonder if the problem is in the recording chain/gain structure end instead. What kind of mics, how are you setting up your mics for recording into the 2488, how do you have the gain structure setup in the 2488, etc. But again, a sound clip would help greatly there too.

Are you doubling the guitar tracks?

Are you setting the recording level to -18db or are you getting it as loud as you can without clipping?

Posting a clip would help solve yur problem quick, fast, and in a hurry.

One thing you can do is to send the isolated direct track to these guys....

http://www.trycho.com/trychostore/category1.aspx?SID=6&Category_ID=5

They do reamping, sims, and all kinds of other track manipulations. You send the track via ftp etc and (if you have it) a commercial reference of the type of sound you want and they'll send a few processed snips of your own track back to you as an example. If you like what they do, they give you a price for doing the entire track. I've used these guys for a few things although not your exact type of situation.
