Im trying to buy my daughter recording equipment for her birthday and have no idea what to get.

she wants something that she can plug into her keyboard and record and also record her voice on.

can someone tell me what the CHEAPEST thing would be that would get the job done?

thanks.

how serious is she about quality? before i got into digitial recording, i would easily run a mic and any instrument into a mixer (probably $50 or less) and into my stereo, which your daughter probably has, and record cassettes at mediocre quality. it was quick, simple, and cheap. but you could always go with a small 4 track or so recorder, which is what i think youre aiming for.

also, the tascam 788 isn't too expensive anymore..you may want to look into that. and of course..you'll need a mic for vocals..i'd suggest a Shure SM57 about 75 bucks and the 788 is about 550 i believe. You could always go cheaper, just thought i'd throw in my two cents.

It doesnt have to be outstanding quality.. but pretty good.

shes just interested in recording her voice with a keyboard beat.

thanks for the suggestions

Any of the entry level 4 track cassettes by Tascam or Fostex will get the job done for about $100. Add an inexpensive dynamic microphone (for singing/rapping) from Peavey, Audio Technica, Beyerdynamic etc. for another $50 or so. If you want to spend a little more money, there are 4 (&6 &8) track digital recorders with built-in microphones from Boss, Tascam, Zoom (& probably some I've forgotten) starting around $400- these will have some extra functionality over the cassettes, as well as better sound quality.

It would also help to know what keyboard she has. That way we could know what sort of cables she could be able to use to plug into a recorder in the first place.

So, if there's a way that you could post the model of keyboard that she's got, that will help, too.

HEY.

Check out the boss br 532. It's a 4 track and is not overly
expensive. This will work fine for key board and vocals.
It also has a built in drum machine.

Does your daughter have a computer?

You might be able to just purchase a microphone and some recording software.
