please help a newbie

:confused: i've got a portastudio 2. i can only record 2 tracks. i put guitar jack in mic 1 or guitar in or mic 2. select any track. fine. i then choose any jack and any track an 2nd track in fine. but after that nada. it either doesn't record or it records over an existing track. what i really want to do is record guitar and a drum track at the same time (which I can do) and then add track which i can't.
 
Porta 02

I don't know how the switches are set up on this model, but make sure that when you record track 3 or 4, the other swtiches are turned to safe or off or whatever it says. From the looks at a porta 02, there are track 1-safe-2 and 3-safe-4. When you record track 1, make sure the other switches are on safe. The 2 inputs should be assigned to the track you are recording on. Keeping the other switches on safe, should prevent recording over something recorded. If that doesn't work, get rid of it.

The anwer is in using the white record enable sliding switches and changing them to tracks 3 and 4 when trying to record the second pass. You can moniter the first two tracks in the heaphones by turning up the levels on the rotary volume knows for track one and two respectively. These are located on the upper left section of the Porta02.
