OK, I've been doing my research and asking questions, to the point where I actually know what to ask now... So first of all, here is what I am looking for.
1) A controller that has knobs and sliders that I can use with Reason 3.0 and a couple of other programs. 2) An onboard keyboard. I do not need a large one but I would like to be able to compose in at least E and A. 3) Price range of approximately $150-250 is the target for now.

During my research, I came across three basic types of controllers - MIDI, MIDI with keyboard, and MIDI with keyboard and audio interface.

The first two are easy enough. The third type, if I have this right, provides an instrument interface if your computer does not have a way to plug instruments or mics into it. I have a Guitar Port and an Audigy 2 Platinum with the audio drive, so I do not need an interface at this time. I would imagine that they are very beneficial for people using laptops and changing locations a lot, but I do not need this right now or for the foreseeable future. So I think that option #2 is what I am looking for. The one that I have picked out after doing a little research and comparisons on the web is the following

It seems to do what I want. To get the same sort of thing with an audio interface costs another $200 and I doubt that I'll need it, as I am primarily working alone at my computer. I can buy an interface later if I need one. I looked at a couple of Behringer controllers in the B Control series, and they look nice and got good reviews but I want a keyboard. Any suggestions of other controllers, or opinions, criticisms, or reviews - please post them! All info is helpful to me!

Thanx

I am also looking at Edirol stuff. They seem to be priced a bit lower than the M-Audio stuff. I am not looking to save $30 at the expense of features though.
I am looking at the PCR-30, but I cannot find what the difference is between that and the PCR-A30 so if anyone knows, please let me know. {{update - I THINK that the difference is that the A30 is 24 bit while the regular 30 is not. Otherwise they seem to be the same}}.

Also the PCR50 looks nice, with some extra keys

However I do not see pitch and modulation wheels on the Edirol stuff, and I do like both of those features.

And, if I was not going to use the keyboard, I like the looks of this Edirol unit

I have also looked at this Korg unit

And some from CFE, this one is $199

How often do you guys compose with, or otherwise use keyboards? I am no keyboard wizard but I can stay in key and in time, and compose with one. But I am not sure how necessary one is, because as a newbie I don't know these sort of things. Maybe you set set the key and then adjust it real time with a parameter? And unless you are a dedicated keyboard player, maybe you don't really need it? Although I have a feeling that I will want one. But I totally do not know, so please help!

PLEASE help me out here! I'd do it for you if I could! Thanx!

i don't know too much about keyboards and MIDI, I am mostly a guitar/drums audio guy.....I think you should close this thread and re-post in MIDI Mania or maybe the Keyboard forum....They would be better places, and people who knew how to answer you better would probably read them......sorry i can't help you....

Thanks, I was thinking the same thing. But I tried it once and got no replies, so I did some more research to be able to sak a more thorough question and I will try again. Thanx!

Do a search in the Keyboard forum - there are many excellent replies to this question there.

I think that Maudio Keystations might be the best bet in your price range.

I condensed it and put it in the midi mania forum. Thanks
