I got a chance to play with some drum mic,s on the 312 mixer today and Im liking what im hearing.

Ghost I moved the mics in to xy and and moved the kick mic out some. I havnt added a snare mic cause Im still trying to get a descent sound with just the 3 mic thing.

Here is a mp3 of the mix i got from this setup.

I'm guessing you read the thread where I was telling about my computer locking up right when I was about to place a "snipe bid" on the 312. Hope you enjoy it, maybe I can get the next one.

See Ya
Dennis

Sorry about that Dennis, This was the third one I tried to get before I got one, The other 2 I missed out on by 2.50 at the last second.

It sounds really good for three mics Herm.

What did you record it to?

Are there some Roto-toms I hear in there?

:)

It is recorded to the tascam 38 using 2 oktavas 012,s and a audio technica atm25 mic.

No roto toms my kit has a 10 inch tom on it.

Thanks

Herm,

I checked out the little science project we discussed and it would seem to be a complete success!!

The kit now sounds one million percent better!

There is now, little to no phase issues, the kick sounds way better and we can hear the entire kit in full glorious stereo!

Even the snare seems to be in pretty good balance considering there is no direct Mic on it!

Well done and pretty good playing there too!

Now I feel like I almost know what the hell I am talking about!!

Cheers! :)

ps; what the hell happened?? the hr.com site fell off the face of the earth this evening for about 2 hours?? Did anyone else have this problem??

Ghost- Yeah server freak out.

The mix is so much like what you hear actually playing the drums... I like it.
(Cool beat too)

:)

Quoted by Billy;
The mix is so much like what you hear actually playing the drums

Actually, the kit sound like what the listener would hear as the hats and snare are on the right side and the toms roll from right to left, just as it should be in a natural live performance.

Herm did an excellent, A1 job of setting the Mic's up properly and getting an excellent level on them that didn't clip the circuitry or the tape.

He is a true talent both at the kit and in front of it, recording it.

Now lets see some equally good bass and guitar work, some killer keys and vocals and we can then all become groupies!!

I am sure Herm will want lots of ageing burnt out looser groupies like me!;)

Cheers! :)

Also to Herm,

Take a picture of the Mic set up and placement so that you don't ever loose that great positioning you found there.

Also, Make notes of the gain settings and any eq or compression setting that were used to achieve this sound.

It is the task of any good engineer to record not only the sound but the methods and setting of them so that they can be repeated effortlessly again and again, when ever you want that same result.

I keep a note book with successful results of mic placement and mixer settings and have been doing this for many years.

It's all part of the discipline of being a good engineer and something you may wish to do as well.

Cheers! :)

Oh yeah for sure, I got ya on the placement and panning.

I meant it's very clear and true to the actual sound of drums that he's captured... It's like being in the room or playing them.

What's the room like you recorded in Herm?

:)

Hi Herm, damn I wish I had my equipment set up so I could listen:rolleyes: Can you post a pic of the mic setup? One pic=10,000 you know what. Which is usually my posts length:p Not this one. Thanks

Thank you for the thumbs up guys, and Thank you for the help FM.

This is the first time in 6 years I have recorded my kit and said yes i can live with that sound. I have been through Adat,s with Big Mackie boards, Good preamps with a digital set up and there was always something that was not right.
I really think that the Tascam 38 and 312b mixer helps. For me anyway it just has a better sound.

Now its time to try and get a descent sound out of my cheap Bass
guitar
:D

Also I posted a pic of the kit and the room its in.

Again Thanks
