playing a DXI in real time w/keyboard

When I try to play a dxi with my midi keyboard I can here the sound come through the audio out but there is a delay so its impossible to play a song with the keyboard in real time using the dxi. Is there a way to here the sound instantly as if it were a keyboard. Here is what I'm using:

AMD athlon 800mhz pc
audiophile 2496
home studio 2002
windows 2000
 
It's only possible if you have WDM drivers and have the latency adjusted to be nice and low.
