I am using Cakewalk Guitar Studio.

If I have a midi track loaded, I can record a guitar track while the midi file plays, and can hear both. However, if I have recorded a guitar track to an audio channel, when I record a second one to a new channel, I cannot hear the first one while recording. I can still only hear the midi playing. Is there any way to hear the midi and the 1st guitar track while recording a second guitar track ?

What kind of soundcard? To be capable of doing this the card must be what's called "full duplex." Most reasonably decent cards are these days. This can also be defeated. Select Audio from the Options menu. In the dialog box that appears, click on the Advanced tab. On the lower left of this page, there is a section of checkboxes labeled Playback and Recording. The first one needs to be checked to enable this, if your soundcard is full duplex.

One note: some older soundcards (notably the Sound Blaster AWE cards) are only capable of operating in full duplex mode with reduced playback quality. That is, while you are recording over a previously recorded track, you can hear that track, but only at 8-bit resolution. (Everything is played back correctly when you are only playing and not recordiing also). Some people find this acceptable, others find it unacceptable.

Thanks again Alchuck,

I thought it might be a setting I was missing, and it is. I have an SB Live - full duplex.
