These are the same songs I previously posted but followed the advice you guys gave. I think the recording quality is better but talent is still very much lacking. :D

Also, I tried to tone down the bass as much as I could but it's still too strong.

The first one was used with a SM58 for vocals. I kinda like it with a lot of reverb. The other two are done with NTKs and SP C4s.

I'd appreciate any comments.

No way, man, those are pretty good. I'm no recording expert, but the songs sound great. You've got a great voice and I like the guitars. The tones on both the instruments and vocals sound great. Seems to be a lot of noise in the background (the shhhhhhhhh sound). Also, the guitar on "For You" is pretty boomy on the bottom end.

I enjoyed listening to them.

I agree with the bass being too boomy. I just can't tone it down anymore. I need to look at an alternative mic positioning next time. The background noise shows my inexperience with mics and pre-amps and levels and stuff. I have a lot of learning to do.

My speakers here at work are bad. I'll definitely listen to your music when I get home.

I listened to a couple tracks -

I have a sub on my computer speakers, and I can't get past the boominess. it overrides everything. It sounds like everything else is pretty good. Maybe try re-mixing?

I think we sent each other email awhile back. I was interested in a Taylor 615ce, if I'm not mistaken. If I am, it won't be the first time.

Anyway, your recording sounds great!

I tried remixing (you don't mean recording new tracks do you?) but can't seem to fix the boominess. I have a sub in my PC too and I struggle with the bass big time. I will need to redo the tracks and either roll off the bass on the SP C4s or reposition and not point directly in the sound hole.

Nope, not me.


It's hard to get rid of sometimes (boominess). My first SEVERAL attempts came out pretty boomy as well. I've found that mic placement is the biggest factor. I can get the guitar to sound ten times better than it does in that track with good mic placement, and seperate tracking, but the performer can't sing and play seperately..DOH!

Hey thanks, Sage. I used to struggle with the boominess myself. If you've got a pair of sdc's, which I think you said you did (c4's?), I would do an x/y stereo mic'ing. That's what I did with "The Way It Has To Be", and there's no problem with boominess. Neither mic is pointed directly into the sound hole, which might be causing it if you're doing it that way. I use a pair of MXL 603s's and go into a dmp3 preamp. With the background noise, maybe it's just the room you're recording in. Once the music is going it's hard to notice it. A good performance (which you deliver) easily covers for it in my opinion. I think a great performance masks inexperience with recording, but it's hard for recording techniques to mask a bad performance (think any vocals by Ashley Simpson :)

You have a soft beautiful voice and a great vibrato. Great harmonies! I'm no recording expert but it sounds like you are on your way.

What mic placement did you use for the acoustic guitar? I have been working on mic placement and like to know how others do it. If you don't mind.

Thanks Guitarhunny. I wish I knew what vibrato is. Doesn't matter, I'm good at it!

One mic was pointed a the 12th-13th fret and the other was directly in the soundhole. I'd like to try pointing it below the bridge.

For some reason, the x-y did not appeal to me but will experiment with that some more.

I read a couple of really helpful sites. I can forward you the urls when I get home but the wisdom and experience in this forum is my main source of education.
