Damned if I do
I just wanted to reemphasize the importance of placement. I took me about an hour to get these overheads in place, but once I did the time seemed immaterial. And mind you, this is just for recording rehearsals! But while listening to playback, I hit the mono button, and no phase problems whatsoever.

Here's a shot to give you better perspective. They're in kinda low, but the room is fairly dead.

I have 2 MoonGels on all the toms, and one on the snare. There's even one inside my cowbell! I used to use rings, but the MoonGels are fantastic. Plus it's fun to watch them flatten out when you strike the drum! :D

I agree, they do sound fantastic.

I`ve just been showed a new way of dampening the toms by a drummer that I work with.

Just put a small strip of cothing fabric (ex. 3cm wide 15 cm long)
and mount it under the tom rims and heads.

Its the best dampening I`ve heard...
Best sounding drums as well :)

lol naka, what instruments do you play?
yeah i got moongels too, but just today actually i got some evans e-MAD things, or something. they work really well to dampen the sound. Affordable too

Do you get too much snare in the O/H that way?
No, in fact I usually need to bring up the snare (I record all the drums to their own tracks too).

they arent emad heads, but just little stretchy things with velcro on them

You need to get yourself a stereo bar. Makes this sort of thing much easier, it also frees up a mic stand because both mics are suspended by one.

How's it sound compared to when you M/S miced your kit?
Haven't tried that yet, but I'll let you know when I do. I also want to experiment with ORTF.

Well I did have a horrible acid trip once (about 17 years ago, and for some reason I stopped doing acid right after that) so I thought that was funny! :D

Yeah, I saw a review of a new one in the latest TapeOp that has degree markers. Think I'll try that one.

I have one and I just leave it set up with cables and everything. When a band comes in, I just have to move it into position.

The big difference between XY and spaced pair is:
XY, the middle of the stereo image is the loudest part of the image
Spaced pair, the middle of the stereo image is the quietest part of the image.

I've done spaced pair for my particular arrangement, and XY just sounds better to me. I did record a band recently using a spaced pair, though, and for the drummer's style it worked.

That reminds me, I have a new thread I need to start.

Sounds nice, worth the time getting the setup just right.

I can't but help notice that speaker cab...looks like someone with anger managment issues got their hands on it :p
