I'm just listening to The Wall/Young Lust. The vocal decay just "hangs" for a moment - sounds great. Anyone know what they are doing? Just high-end processors? Thanks.
Floyd was famous for use of the Binson Echorec early on, kind of like a tape delay except that it used a spinning metal disc instead of tape. Wall-era floyd was somewhat more technically advanced, what with Bob Ezrin hanging about, and probably used a combination of doubling and quality plate reverb on Young Lust, at least that's what I'm hearing. Great sound, I agree.
i just tried doubling a line by 10 ticks + an impulse plate reverb & it sounded good. Is there a lot of difference between a good s.ware verb and the "real thing"?
That entirely depends on what you mean by, "a lot." Best not to ask this question unless you are ready for a whole heapin' mess of opinions to descend upon this thread like the falling fetuses in "Eraserhead."
Having said that, if you like how it sounds, it's good enough. Hope this is helpful.
You don't have to do all that. Just send the verb track to a nice plate on a send, and set the predelay pretty big.
If you really wanna capture the total PF vocal style, you just need to get hold of DG. Most of the vocal "sound" is him, him, and himself harmonizing MANY different parts. Fricken musical genius IMHO. One of my all time favorites.
