Hi everyone,
my name is Dan and i have 2 taskams 414mk2(dont ask y I ave 2 of them its a long story) i enjoy recording very much and I"m beginning to become more serous in my sound quality. so my quetion is this in bouncing tracks 1-3
are youy suppose to utilize the high and low EQs for your bounce or are you not suppose to? In the manual it states that bouncing tracks is like a mixdown only onto an emty track but it also tells yoy to pan right all your channels so is that going to effect your final mixdown? One more thing when beginning tracking what setting does the 4 track need to be set at when you begin recoding your first track....effefct 2 or tape cue? The manuel has got me confused about these issues and if anyone can help me i would be forever greatful to you

I would EQ the tracks because if you go flat you will only be able to EQ track four which is a blend of 3 tracks together. I would think effects like reverb should be added also, because each track may use a different level of reverb. If there bounced together you can then only reverb the whole blended track. So do a full mix of the 3 tracks. I do think you lose the pan left right (things will be centered from each track) because of the hard pan on each track to the right Tracks 1-3 are in Mix mode and track 4 is in Mic/Line mode for recording. Remember by doing this you are creating another generation of tape to tape, and you can not undue the bouced mix. So make sure you like the mix before you put stuff on the other tracks. DB

Since you have two machines I hope you are using one to bounce in to the other. This way you have the benefit of using the eq on both machines and you can put 4 tracks into one instead of 3 to 1. Also it gives you a safety copy of your original 4 tracks. And it lets you make more than just one mix of your first 4 tracks Something that was done alot in the old days.

Go with what Herm says. I forgot you mentioned you had two machines. DB

if you use one machine to bounce to the other like herm suggests the recieveing machine should be set at high speed this improves sound quality on the end recording the Faster a recording the better the quality(more tape for signal). As for the panning right this is ok unless u have a stero fx included i.e. ping pong delay then you need to bounce on to two tracks whichwill have to be panned hard left then right respectively.
Can't you sync the two machines giving you 8 Tracks? Look into sympte options

Synching the two machines would only give him six tracks, since a track from each would have to be sacrificed for the timecode. Still, it might be worth looking into.

Keep bouncing. Bounce from one machine to the other, in stereo,...

and that's probably as good as it gets.

Unfortunately, there is no way to sync two 414's together with SMPTE. One 414 can serve as code-only master (to other capable devices), but the other 414 cannot slave. Sorry!!!

can anyone send me a diagram on how to effectivly hookup the 2 machines?
I never even thought of that idea and would like to give it a try i just dont know how.
Is it possible to get music off your cpu (plug where you hook up your pc speakers)
into your 4 track (into one of your input track slots)and hear the music from your cpu though the headphones from your for track to record to a single track of the 4track?

Step by Step explanation of "ping ponging"

Hey, I have a Fostex X-12, and i need to learn how to ping pong, but i can't figure it out. I recorded on the first three tracks, then i set it on the fourth track, hit play, then hit record, but i didn't work. Can some one please help me figure it out?

It's not possible as a self contained unit.

However, you can do it with a patch cable that goes from the left or right Line-Output directly into your "target" bounce track's input. You'd have to pan your "source" tape tracks either hard left or hard right, accordingly.

Using a patch cable method to achieve a track bounce is as good as it gets with this unit, but without this method the X-12 unit is not complex enough in the mixer section to do a track bounce internally.

;)
