Hey all. I'm getting close to the time where I'm gonna start my studio and buy a mixer and mics. I've made my decision on a mixer (Alesis Multimix 16 Firewire) and I'm debating over a Shure Beta 52 or AKG D112 for bass and over MXL 604s of Studio Projects B1s for overheads. I know I'm gonna use a Shure SM57 for snare, but for the beginning I'll use two overheads, and if I have enough money I'll put in the bass mic. I'm holding off on the snare because someone I know recorded his drums w/ just 2 overheads and a bass, and you could still hear the snare very well.

Anyway...I would like to see all of your mic placement pics. Whether it be 2 overheads or a mic for every single piece of your kit, post em. I'm more curious to see ones with 2 overheads, a bass, and a snare. ALSO sound clips along with the pics would be awesome also! Thanks!

That is a tasty lookin' drum set. What sort of tunes are you into?

I'm bettin that you're biggest problem will be the room. That hard floor, the flat walls and cabinets behind are going to reflect and bounce something nasty. Think about an area rug for starters. I would like to hear a baseline sample...you've got to start somewhere right?!

I would do as you're thinking...2 OH's and a kick mic. Sure Beta52 is a nice mic but you'll have to decide for yourself either way. I've got one and I like it...tuck it inside the base drum. Placement of the kick mic will have a big effect on the sound. Closer and pointed at the beater will get ya more THWAP...further back and more toward the shell will get ya more boom. An additional SM57 or Audix i5 on the snare would be a bonus but for starters...not necessary.

Check your recordings...move the mics and take A LOT OF TIME to get the most out of your setup before you spend another dime!

If you can make it sound good with 3 mics, you'll be a better sound engineer for it in the long run. Nothing wrong with a 3 mic set up. Start there anyways. That way you'll get the best placment.

alternative, indie, progressive, and experimental

my current band does a lot of stuff like the Strokes and Kings of Leon, and we do some stuff like Incubus too.

And actually, that's not the room I'm going to use. I'm going to move my drums and computer into a smaller room, and put studio foam and acoustiquilts around it, so it should sound a lot better. My drums sound really good in the room they're in in those pics, but the acoustics of it are awful...hopefully they'll be way better when I "soundproof" my studio room.

No I haven't, but thanks a lot for those links!

Here is a thread on another forum where I did all of this already. http://audiominds.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=2980&b=1&st=&p=&#entry

Also note, you'll see an Audix D6 sort of out in space in some pics... this thread I was only showing OH micing techniques... but the D6 is usually placed right below the sideways Tama T logo on the kick about 2 inches from the resonant head. A lot of guys cut holes in their heads for attack, but I never found I needed it if I dampeded the resonant head.

Hope it helps.
