Pickup question

My friend was asking me about this, but I have no idea about rewiring pickups. Basically he swapped the bridge pickup in his mexi strat for a Seymour Duncan hot rail (stacked) and now the output with the single coils is greater than the duncans output. Was something installed wrong?
 
Did he put a neck model Duncan pick-up in the bridge by mistake? There is a difference you know; neck pick-up resistance is around 10k ohms, bridge is around 16k ohms. Mix those two up, and yeah, you'll have problems.

However...

On any 4 conductor pickup you will need to solder 2 wires together to get the 2 humbucking coils in series-otherwise it is probably now an out of phase single coil sound. See how in the diagram red and white are soldered and taped or shrink wrap would be better. Show him this diagram and I bet it will straighten it out.--Tony

Thanks EZ and Tony I'll hit him up with all these questions, should put him on the right track. I don't think it was installed too well.
