Picking up where I'd left off.

Hey guys,

In January 2004 I'd built my first DAW, I then became very busy with work, among other things. For the past 10 months I had very little time to record anything serious, other than to quickly record rough ideas. Anyway, I'm ready to pick up where I had left off now, including some component transplanting. But first, I need some advice.

My Current Rig:
P4 3.0CGHz 800M
Asus P4P800
2) Seagate 120 GB
1 GB TwinX RAM
2 Panaflos for circulation
Forton PSU (too loud, has to go)
Zalman CNPS7000A (too loud, has to go)
Globe fan 120mm intake (WAY too loud.)
GXCube R 7000 Video card (no dual monitoring capabilities)
M - Audio Delta 1010
Cubase SX 2 (I guess I'll spring for SX3 now.)

What I need:
120mm Super Silent Intake
Super Silent CPU fan
Super Silent Power Supply w/ fan controller
Video card with dual monitor capabilities (I won't be playing any games) or perhaps another GXCube V card?
MotU 828mkII (more inputs & outputs, headphone output, punch pedal feature)
Control Surface - Perhaps an Edirol UR80?

I'd like to hear your opinions & suggestions on the above, this forum was very valuble to me when I built my initial setup.

/Jason

Hi Erich,

Thanks for that link. Do you use any silenX products personally?

The Matrox G450 seems to be the most popular choice from what I've read on various forums.

When I built my system I got a Jaton Geoforce4 MX440 ($53 at newegg). I have no complaints with it.

I have one of their power supplys. It is very quiet, but I did not realize at the time that most of my computer noise was coming from the front intake fan and CPU fan. So the power supply alone did not solve my problem.

One reason quiet fans are quieter than standard fans is that they rotate slower. My internal case temp runs very close to the maximum recomended for the power supply, so I am hesitant to go to a lower speed intake fan. I asked Silenex about this and they recomended an additional 80mm case fan plus a quiet CPU fan/heatsink. They estimated the total system noise due to those components (including the power supply) would be ~21db at 3ft. That all sounds good except it will cost ~200$ for the parts (including the power supply I have already bought) so I haven't decided if I want to take the pulnge yet.

Hey guys,

I think I was loooking at the Matrox card initially, but several people steered me into the direction of the GexCube, even though it does not have dual monitoring capabilities.

As far as my cooling goes, I bought a zalman fan controller to undervolt my intake, and my PSU already has an undervolt knob, even with their minimal settings, they are still roaring! So I really don't mind spending a few hundred dollars to silently cool my pc.

Are there any more sites you guys would reccomend? Being at work all of the time really keeps me out of the loop.

Thanks again,
Jason

Any reason you're wanting to go with the MOTU over the delta1010? Do you want to run both of them at the same time? The MOTU is better quality and expandablity-wise. If you went the the MOTU, I might sell the 1010 and try and buy an 8 channel mic pre with ADAT out (like the presonus digimax or M-audio octane or the new studio projects one). It'd give you the same number of analogue inputs, but with just one higher quality interface.

My 2 cents.
