Roel, I listened to this piece and the performance is VERY GOOD!!!
While Greig has never been one of my favorite composers, I can tell your pupil did a very nice job playing this piece.

The recording seems to lack some real, clear definition in the lower frequencies. I have found that backing the mics off from the source doesn't really help much in this instance. The problem is in the diaphram of the mic.
There is an ENORMOUS amount of harmonics, sympathetic resonance, plosives...etc. happenning under the lid of a piano. Trying to faithfully capture and detail all of those is indeed difficult.
I have trhown every mic I have or have ever com across at my grand, trying to capture that detailed piano sound typical of classical playing. Good stereo micing techniques are critical to acheiving that, as of course is mic selection.
The best I have been able to do was from using a pair of TLM103's.
My second choice would be the SM81's. (read my other post in the mic forum for comparisions)
and finally, from my mic locker, I'd reach for the ECM8000's. I really believe you could pull off a very nice recording using these, but be prepared to spend a lot of time experimenting.

ahh...finally someone with a real piano, responding. I've also had luck with the AKG 451's, with the cardiod capsules...which I see have been re-introduced by AKG with a fixed capsule. They're damn good mics on pianos, high hats, overheads for that matter, acoustics....just a bunch of stuff.

some small diaphragm condensors would be my first reach, and the Behringers might do the job.

and if you don't want such a 'spread' with the stereo...try an XY setup(which of course would suck with the ECM8000), but I think the separation between mics works much better, however.

I don't have those mics. I wish I did, because I have heard similar testimonies. And I'd like to try 'em out for myself!

Good tips. Thanks Michael, Mixmkr!

I read somewhere that the 451's were very good for piano. But they's outta my budget. Same for the neumanns. Actually, I don't even have a budget. :D Ordered a pair of ECM8000 anyway, since they are cheap, and I'll find some use for them anyhow.

But the girl has exams coming up, so I doubt she'll come over to record again anytime soon. Guess I'll have to play myself.
