Phonic compressor/pre-amp

Noticed a lovely silver thing in the corner of out local music shop the other day. A Phonic compressor/pre-amp the salesman tells me it is. An entry level compressor of sorts.

I am new to PC recording - have been told to get a compressor - and this is the only one in my price range (apart from the Fat Boy). Its about $700NZ which I suppose is about $350 US.

Just wondering if anyone has used, knows any info about this.

Phonic is really garbage gear -- you should avoid it.

a lot of phonic stuff is reverse-engineered behringer gear ... i.e. cheap behri copies - i believe that's saying something!

you could look at a vocal strip such as the focusrite trakmaster. you get the pre from some of their more expensive stuff but it has to be said users have reported varying results with the compressor.

the bear knows best so go and find an RNC (i can't get them in the UK).
 
also the behringer composer compressors are one of the few behri pieces that are quite widely used and liked. people talk about the autocom, i used the 2200 once (in a live setup) and found it to be quite useful.

I am a bit up in arms wether or not I should get a compresor.

Could I get away with buying a pre-amp and using the compressor on SL?? Is the compressor in Cubase ok?

I am guessing that I would have to apply it to the vocal track after its recorded?

Just to clarify - a pre-amp is basically to make the signal hotter - and a compressor is basically to even out the level of an anolouge source?

i would much sooner use the compressor on cubase than pay for something like the phonic. i use the compressor in VST and it's very usable, although i would rather have something i can use physically too, especially on the occasions i want compression on the way into being recorded rather than adding it afterwards.
