I know there's some Phil Keaggy fans around here, so I thought you would like to know:

In the November issue of Recording magazine there's an Interview with Phil Keaggy. The blurb on their website says, "Learn the secrets of the modest basement studio where one of our era’s greatest guitarists has self-produced many of his best records."

Got it. Read it. Loved it. I need to buy some of Phil's acoustic stuff. Brush Strokes? Sketches? Any recommendations?

ohhhhh...

I had Phil sign my acoustic years ago...and then some mother@#!#$ stole it.

I was wondering what his basement studio was like...It's got to cut down on costs, and it sounds pretty good overall...Have to get that magazine....thanks.

The Master and the Musician had electric stuff too but was primarilly acoustic and is simply the quentissential Keaggy recording. One of the best albums ever made. He went downhill fast after that I think (around 1978 or so.) He still has his moments though, that's for sure. You know, the Glass Harp has a new live album out now too. It's nice to hear him play like that again!

I dunno..I always though 1991 was his peak

I always thought Beyond Nature - with it's multi-layered strings and so forth was the ultimate album...and besides, the two before and after it weren't too bad...

I just picked up Phil's newest album last week. It's a latin influenced accoustic collection. VERY TASTY.

Peace <><

Keaggy

I don't know if anyone has heard or remembers an album Phil did in the early '80s called "Underground"..........it was done in his basement demo studio, and was done on a Tascam 144 cassette machine! He said in the liner notes that some friends heard the songs, helped him picked the best ones, and he released it.The songs were just demos that he hadn't put on other albums. One song did make it on a later album----"The Survivor"....recut,of course.
This album sadly has been out of print for years.........it was on the Nissi label, which folded along with a few other Keaggy albums like Getting Closer.Although the latter may have been rereleased,Underground was left behind-----if anyone knows different, please post! This was Phil being relaxed in his own environment, and playing well. One further note.....the cassette version had two bonus tracks over the album. This was also called "Underground ,Vol. 1..." was there more to follow?
I had the privelege of getting to jam with Phil...actually,I was working sound for him at a concert (solo) and he called me up unexpectedly (a few friends set it up ). Other than getting his guitar out of tune and blowing some changes behind him,we had a pretty good time...Phil was very forgiving!

Hey Tweed!

There are a lot of albums that Phil has released only through his fan club. I believe there were more underground albums in that bunch. I remember the one you're talking about very well. It actually sounded very good except for a rather annoying drum machine (sounded almost like one of those beat machines they used to build into organs years ago.) I don't think this has ever been released on CD yet. Beats the heck out of that horrible boomy sounding Nebraska album (Springstien) people always mention when talking of 4-track cassette albums. Some good stuff on there!

I agree,Windowman.........the drums were rather grating on Underground, even though it seems as though they tried to overdub a real snare on some stuff!
Thanks for the info on the releases through the fan club.....I will check it out.A friend of mine had a video of one of the Glass Harp performances from the early '70s,plus a reunion tour they did a few years back; it was a treat to see how Phil works a trio.
God Bless everyone, have a great Thanksgiving.......
