phasing between the overheads

I use akg c430 for over heads but hear something strange.I do not even know how to name it...
Every mic is recording fine the left or right side of the drum kit ,but they capture a little bit of eachother and there is some very strange effect. Another isue I have is the sound from the snare,toms kick I get in the overheads.
Should I use phase switch on both overheads so they do not cancel with the snare toms kick mics?
Or..Is there a general rule on how to mice with 1 kick 2 toms 1 snare to overhead mics??

You will always get the drums in the overheads. If you are getting phase problems, reverse the phase of whatever is getting canceled. (if everything is getting cancelled, reverse the overheads)
If you are recording in a very small room, the could be the problem. It might not be the direct sound of the drum in the overhead, it might be a reflection off the wall that is causing the cancellation.
 
well the direct sound is ok but the other have some deley.
AAnd it sounds kinda funky-in bad funky way.
 
First you have to determine where the phase problem happens. Is it each overhead is out of phase with the other, or are the overheads phasing with the close mics.

If it's the overheads being out of phase with each other, try this:

If your preamp has a phase reversal switch, turn ONE mics switch over and place the position where they cancel each other out. Then turn it back to it's original position and the mics will be perfectly in phase.

If the overheads are out of phase with the close mics, reverse both switches.

Try recording just the overheads first to see if that's the problem.

I like the way you signed yourself this time..'CONFUSED' ..What ..you can not figure it out ????...Does not matter what it sounds like right now..buuuut I bet if you recorded at 96KHZ it would solve your problem...thank you for your applause... :D
 
Good advice from PhilGood and Farview. How do you have your overheads set? Are you familiar with X/Y configurations, Jecklin discs, and the like? Do a search on this forum, there is a lot of useful info from previous posts.

If you were a pro, you would know how to avoid this.
 
Just track 96k and everything automaticly sorts itself out. All pros know this.
