Phantom Power?

Phantom power supplies power to your condensor microphones. You don't need it on for dynamic mikes, but it won't damage them if it is on. It's usually around 48 volts.

If the dynamic mic is not balanced it can damage the Mic and the phantom power supply

It usually lives in the sewers under the opera house and plays a pipe organ, but when trouble comes it morphs into a super-duper crime fighting hero

Wilkee,

Can you direct me to where I can find further info on the dynamics damaging the phantom power supply? I've looked and cannot come up with anything and I don't want to mess up my phantom power. (I use an unbalanced dynamic with a condenser on the same board)

It's the mic that will get damaged

You can check the cable running from the unbalanced dynamic mic just to be safe. The wiring scheme should be as follows if the mic has a standard XLR mic end to a 1/4" phone plug.

XLR pin 1 & 3 to shield.
XLR pin 2 to center wire.

This should work for running an unbalanced mic into a balanced input.

Most of the manuals with mixers always alert you to the dangers of using unbalances mics with phantom power on. What it does is to earth one side of the 48v supply. Now if that supply is well designed and current limited then no damage will be done . However if it is not then it could blow the voltage regulator?
