phantom power question

Hello all - my first post. Hopefully if my new set-up is ok, I won't be spending more time here than recording.

I just picked up a Tascam usb-122 and an MXL990, 991 mic set. Last night, while screwing around, I pondered the question: how do I know if phantom power is working? The mics still register a signal if phantom is turned off.

I made a test recording with phantom power and it sounds quite good both on acoustic guitar and vocal.

No phantom power, no signal. A condensor won't work at all without power.
