just wondering if anyone is using the SHURE PG81, it comes with a set of drum mics. i wanted to know how the sound is compared to something like an SM57. i use it for overhead, acoustic guitar, and vocal micing.

I've used similar Shures, it has a good sound for acoustic guitar, choir, and even fiddle, things like that where you don't want too much high-end. It has a smoother and higher range than an SM57, and it's way more sensitive, but while it will work for overhead, it doesn't really have enough sparkle for a good cymbal sound. I generally don't like any small diaphragm condenser for vocal.

As that shure PG series goes... those are some nice mics... you spend like 160 on ebay and get 3 toms, a kick, all the rim clips, cables, and a case... I've never tried the PG81... but from what I have tried of the pg56s and just the overall quality... for the price I'm sure they are great.

I'm curious about the PG-81 too... I've got a pair of SM-81's that I really like, and I'm always asked if there's a mic that sounds like the SM-81, but costs less $$. The PG-81 would be the logical choice if it sounds good. Let me know what you think if you try one out.

Well my experience is with the SM94, which has very very similar specs to the PG81. The SM94 is nowhere near as good as the SM81. The PG81/SM94 is a really nice condenser for live use, but if you're used to an SM81 in the studio, you'll be disappointed.

The PG series of Shure mics are pretty poor, IMO.......... they're essentially a low-budget offering, and it sounds like it!

I can say that I think the kick is crap... but the tom mics in that kit sound VERY similar to the SM-57 (in my opinion of course) I'm not really interested enough to go look up specs and such... but for $160... there can't be a better way to get started. Some cables and rim mounts, if bought the wrong way, could cost up to 100 bucks alone. I guess I'm speaking more of the set than I am of the mics and more of the value than I am of the sound, eh?

In addition... I compared the pg56 (I think that's the tom mic) to the oktava mk319 and I thought the oktava sounded much worse. I may of had a bad mic, but the oktava alone was $60.

That's good to know - makes me glad that I've told people to save the extra bucks and buy real SM-81's. ;)

Granted, they're up to around $350 each now, but It's nice to not have to make excuses for the way a mic sounds. I loved mine from the first time I used them about nine years ago.
