i got two questions ..... 1) when your recording vocals are you suupposed to hear yourself through the head phones or only the beat track? 2). when recording in cubase or any other program are you supposed to record in mono or stereo or are these just personal prefrences? ive heard diffrent things from diffrent people but i want some professional advice..

(A) That would depend on what you send to the headphone amp...

(B) Pretty much everything you record is mono. Recording a mono source to a stereo track is either going to give you technical issues (only recording on one side) or if the software is silly enough to allow a mono source to go to both sides of a stereo track (dual mono) you'll take up twice the HD space.

Of course, if you're recording a keyboard output or what not (something with an actual stereo output), you can record to a stereo track - Which is nothing more than two linked mono tracks anyway.

i dont have a headphone amp .do i need one? right now i have a alpha lexicon sound card...a four channel mixer and cubase se... im tryin figure, out how do i get just the beat in the phones..without hearing the vocals being sung in the mic .. i just want to hear the beat track in the headphones.....and for example the beat on track one...... and the vocals being recorded on track two...how do i record just the vocals with out the beat recording with the vocals to two...i know its some kind of config i have to do with the mixer in cubase..is it a simple way of explaining this i would appreciate the help if you can......!

You can do this two ways. The main way is to just turn off the "audition" button for the track that the vocals are being recorded to. In Cubase SX, this is the orange when lit button that is located next to the record enable (red) button; it has a speaker on it. When you hit record, which make sure you have the record enable button pressed for the vocal track, it will record anything going in that mic but you won't hear it.

I don't know if Cubase SE has the "audition" button, so you can also do this:
Just turn down the fader to 0 for the vocal track in Cubase. This is the track that your recording to, not your "audio in" tracks (again, I don't know if Cubase SE has "audio in" tracks like SX does) or the faders on your outboard 4-channel mixer.

Most people have the vocals in the phones while they are singing.
I personally would never record my own vox without them being in the monitor. I've never recorded anyone else with out the vox in the phones either.

I wish I could tell you how to do what you want. I have not delt with your sound card or software.
