"I want to test the waters here - I want to find out what different people think about advertising your own personal project here on hr.com, whether it be an album or a microphone or a recording service. My motivation in this is to find out what most people think, and why they think so. I'll do a poll, and I'll respect the results, but I'm also interested in what people have to say about it. I'll put it in more than one forum."

I'm not sure this forum is very viable marketing place for your music to begin with.... now if I was a low price mic manufacturer... hm :)

cheers

With 288 posts in your post count, it probably means you weren't here when Father Time was enthusiastically promoting his site with links and jpegs. It doesn't happen here in the clinic, but it could. Easy.

the statement seems a bit open ended, like a cnn poll- but I thought the mp3 clinic is where musicians get advice and post their work. As with anything else in life ... things that get abused tend to go bad. I also believe that worrying about helping people is far more important than worrying about spam. I receive hundreds of spam emails a month and I think nothing of it.(even though it bugs me) .... personaly Id rather have the internet and deal with spam than not have the internet. maybe im just easygoin' but thats how i feel

I'm willing to feel that way too JMarcomb. Plus, I think this site is moving more toward that sentiment all the time. So, do I get to promote my next CD more than just by posting links to mp3 downloads here in the clinic? :D

yes I missed that whole FT thing even though it seems like he is back.... and I even checked one of his tunes on mp3 and it was time well wasted.. now I'll know to steer clear out of there... :)

and you are right... if you are out to promote your music any little bit helps... like posting it here... I also think that your example with FT speaks aganst allowing it too, you get one person that bullies his way in with no regard for opinions of others just to stir controversy and get attension....

I guess it depends on form of advertizing too...

what did you have in mind when you asked this...???

i think its fine if they wanna do it but if they cause trouble by doing it too much then they should be warned and then have their posts cut.

i dont think alan hyatt is bad from what ive seen. he is excited about the microphones.

really it would be a disservice to the other members to keep your activities a secret. somebody will be interested and the rest can ignore it if they want to.

with the level of activity in this forum overall there is not much of a problem and it seems silly to see some members saying "this is spam" or "this doesnt belong here".

in the mp3 clinic its different cause theres a little more traffic. if somebody tries to sell their microphone in here then the post should be deleted.

:)

Yeah, Kramer, but one reason I posted my poll in the mic forum, mp3 clinic, mix forum, and the Cave is that that's where people *go* on this site. Nobody's gonna advertise stuff in the forums you mentioned, because few people go there.

jeap: yeah, he's excited about his mics. But one reason he's excited is because he identifies with the project, which consists mainly of getting his mics out to people. But if Alan posts here, why not Rode, AKG, AT, Neumann, Marshall, Shure, etc?

Fed: what I had in mind was this... how about I post a link to my song's mp3 download, PLUS a link to my website, PLUS talk it up a lot in this forum, both in this thread and in other threads here. So, you post a link to a song, and I review it, and then I say something like: "Anyway, if you want to see how I handled EQ with a similar problem, check out dobro.biz. Feel free to buy this album or any other album I've done while you're there. It's fun! It's good music! You'll be glad you did!"

aga... now, see that would probably not fly around here well...

If you are a member on HR and you regularly contribute and give feedback and have a link at the bottom of your posts that's ok...

and if you have something of worth on the other end of that link you will eventualy benefit because people will find out and enquire ....

but HR, at least at this point, seems more "homey" place and not business type place (so there is no competition of that type) and people here value that at least dedicated members.... this is just MHO

now dobro as proud owner of almost 4k posts I can see that you would want to get some kind of return on your investment... this board is your life man... I mean common... :D (just joking dobro, realy) :)

cheers

Exactly, thats why it makes this whole idea seem motivated by greed, going after the high traffic sites to bring in more cash. This website has never been about "sells",it's about the ends and outs of recording......why not bring it to everyones attention that from now on if you wanna check out some music and perhaps buy the CD that info will be available in the forums I mentioned and then people can "choose" to go there and check it out.

When people are forced into waking up to a board full of 'Buy my CD threads' in a forum that has absolutely nothing to do with buying CD's,they will turn into vicious animals.

If anything it will turn the poster into one of the "hated" among this site and maybe even cause them to be flamed and ridiculed beyond measure.

I dont really care either way what anybody does around here.Im just one of the many posters that frequent this place.I will just use the "report this post to a moderator tab" and go about my business.

Here's an idea....If you sell a CD through adverstising on this site give Dragon 50-75% of the profits to help run this site...........thats a good idea eh?

i think it would be sweet to have all the guys who design mics in the mic forum rapping about the way mics are designed and manufactured.

but having marketing dorks would be awful.

see the diff?

:)

i dont think there is any danger of this forum turning into a huckster haven. pure hucksters are not interested in being here or reading the threads. its kinda boring stuff for nonenthusiasts.

jeap, you haven't seen me in huckster mode. :D Also, I've seen people here who, in my books, equate with 'marketing dorks'. And when I've applied some judicious flaming to those individuals, sometimes they've backed down, sometimes not. But usually nobody cares much except me. So I'm thinking I'm wasting my time and should readjust my approach.

"... this board is your life man"

It's one of my lives. No exaggeration. :D

Kramer et al: thanks for your replies. They're measured, balanced and useful to me.

Yeh Dobro, I see where your coming from. And most people on this forum are well behaved in many other aspects of there posting as well. I sometimes list my website under my name in a post. It takes up less than one line and Its there purely if anyones interested. I mean I've done it in about 5 or 6 of 250 posts. And a big part of my music is my animated music videos that I do for my songs. Which can be downloaded from my site for free. I'm not really too interested in making money out of this. Thats not why I do it. I'm a professional show off! As an animator you have to be. An entertainer. On my 100th post here (titled "Animated") I posted my first animated music video. It was a big 12 meg download but a lot of people did and the response was great (almost like macle gets) and a lot of people wanted to know more about how I did it. Which I did.
Also I don't think your going to get massive site hits plugging youself here. But its nice to show your buddies around here what your up to.

Now did I just plug the shit out of myself then or what!
