You guys and your collaborations... so darn talented. The only collab I'll ever get is a group effort to help push the handle down and flush all my polished turds. 
Despite the overall lack of cowbell, this song is great. You have a gift for lyrics. Also despite looking like an eggplant with feet, you have some excellent chops. Nice job by Jimmy Swaggert, too.

Chris, I only found this song by accident today and I'm listening in my phones as I type this post.
What a great song, lyrics are superb, very melancholy, hit the spot for all us "Dads". The vocals are very well recorded and strengthened by multitracking in places with delays added. Guitar work is complimentary. But overall, its the vocals and the violin work by David K that make the song what it is. I have saved it in my MP3 files, I like it so much.
BTW, I love the subtle high end bass string guitar work around 3.50 mins.

Sorry to buck the trend, but after another of my famously careful listens, I think you've overdone it with the cowbell.
The basic track is fine, but there's something wrong with the sound. Maybe roll off below about 80kHz?
Also, you've gone too far with the effects - keep it simple, man. I would just use reverb. Maybe five different reverbs in series? And you could reverse a couple of them.
There's a timing issue around 0:01, and I think the threshold on the cowbell compressor is set too low. Or too high.
I may be way off beam here, but did you monitor this on headphones? You've made a classic beginner's mistake with the cowbell. It's not an easy instrument to record well, but stick with it and you'll get there eventually.
My own 15-minute prog-rock epic (played entirely on the cowbell) is being mastered as we speak. It should be pretty amazing. Sorry to hijack your thread.
And I think you should turn it down.

So, I go to Austin...come back, and it's still here...
I gotta' say, I'm really surprised (in a GREAT way) and a little bit "head-swelled" that so many of you offered input on this song. It is helping the song tremendously, but maybe more importantly, it has given me a reason to take the tune more seriously than I had. It was a very quick song to write and record, and I really never thought that more than 10 people would EVER hear it (this includes the total volume of expected CD sales on my next indie release!!!).
DavidK (kind of a perfectionist) has actually sent me a couple of additional tracks, because he wasn't happy with his original effort. God, if he's displeased with the tracks he originally sent me, I can't WAIT to hear what the new ones sound like. I do plan to (briefly) re-post the song with Mr. Kempers' new takes in a month or so, along with the rest of the "Album Cuts" when I feel like they're ready for final tweaking, but for now, I'll just repeat my gushing of gratitude for David's help on this.

I never played a bass before about 5 months ago when I got tired of all of my tracks sounding EXACTLY the same. (2 acoustic tracks, 45 or so vocal tracks). I picked up a $100 Fender "Bronco" bass (short neck), and I live in perpetual fear that I'm playing it "wrong." That riff was an accident that I kept. As a writer, your comments about parenthood and being able to relate to the song mean more than most people on this planet can possibly understand.
So let's put this one to bed for awhile; we need the space on the front page for all of Muzeman's non-music posts!!! (besides, if this thread stays alive much longer, I'm scared to death that Mixmkr is eventually gonna' get around to listening to it and ripping it apart and making me want to start over from scratch...I DON'T HAVE TIME FOR THAT!!!).

You're onto something with this tune Chris(the real version not the joke one).I woke up humming this shit this morning and now I've been whistling the chorus for about 4 hours.
The melody of the chorus has an evil addiction with it that keeps it lingering for hours after listening.
Were any farm animals sacrificed during the recording of this tune?
