King of Bling
Yeah, I've been working on creating thread titles that kinda' grab your attention. Guess it worked.

Maybe I shouldn't post this, but I just can't help myself. "DAVE K" added something to my song "DECEMBER" that makes it, to me, a beautiful piece of work. It ain't me, it's him.

He just sent me a couple of MP3's of REAL violin tracks he did for this song, and I think he deserves about 100 pats on the back for his work. It's late, I just got finished "mixing," and I hope I did it right...it seemed really easy with what he sent me.

Mix comments are always appreciated, but I ain't ditchin' the "fiddle." Sorry again for "RE-posting" this song, but to me, it's an entirely different tune now.

Thanks a ton, Dave...(As I post this, Dave hasn't heard it yet...Forgive me, I couldn't contain my enthusiasm...hope it doesn't SUCK!!)

I can't comment on the mix too much....but...definetly keep the fiddle man, sounds great!

David K......props to you man. I love violin. Hmmm....seems to me that the violin could come up in the mix, at least on my speakers. For instance it doesn't seem as loud as the acoustic guitar and it ought to be at least that loud. Nice playing all the way around and the vocals are nice too. The only place I thought the violin was loud enough on was that last bit right at the end. The rest was too buried.

Ask and ye Shall...

Roger that.

It's louder now. It's also sweeeeeeeeet.

:D

You mean the mix I heard wasn't real violin? I just heard it today and I swear it was real stuff.

Naw Crawdad...you're gettin' senile. That was a Mexican Strat I was playing with a bow...

OOOOHHHHhhh...I know what threw you off. I'd run that fake shit through my newly acquired BBTTE. It sounded pretty good, granted...but the current version is MUUUCH better.

(there's TWO violins now).

very cool violin additives..

imhop, I don't think it should have panned around so much, but I have to bitch about something..

Nice touch to a good tune.Did you know David played on an R.E.M album?:eek: Im sure you did.;)

I like the fiddle. I think it adds a whole new dimension to this tune. You've taken a good song and made it better!

Great job. This really gives the song more feeling. The fiddle really seems to complement the story you are telling.

I really like this!

Brilliant! Love it. Very tastefull musicianship all round.

VETO POWER

Man, I knew I shouldn't have posted it without Dave's approval.

I committed mix error #354 (for me, on this song alone). I liked the violin so much, I used both (absolutely flawless) tracks that Dave sent me. I'll be removing one (per Dave) when I have access to my tracks. I know he's right...I just dig the damned fiddle.

Sam: Thanks for listening again. Yeah, I overpan a lot; that's what I get for mixing with headphones. But I'll tell ya,' I still like the tracks so much, if I'd had a Top-Bottom Pan, I'd probably have used that too to get the total surround sound thing goin'.

Nutdotnet: fiddle stays. Agreed. Maybe lose one, but it's stayin.

Crawdad: Thanks for the kind words in the other thread. This song's about as commercial as NPR, but it's rapidly becoming one of my personal favorites.

Kramer - Who's R.E.M.? Some more musical nobodies that Dave saved from the throngs of mediocrity? (Actually, M. Stipe brags that HE played with DaveK).

boydrj - I agree...at the risk of sounding like a groupie or something, I definitely think the "fiddle" is the best part.

DaveK - I'll ditch one fiddle...but not on MY copy.

God this is good. Very nice all the way around. David, I suppose it's time to get in that LONG line to see if I can get you to do some tracks with me on a collab I just started with a guy who tracked here at the studio this weekend.

On behalf of the only gifted musician involved in this project (i.e., the violinist) "Thanks."

Needs more Cowbell.:mad:

Christopher Walken... the Continental...

I got a fever... and the only prescription, is more cowBELL.

little help?

After a long day of evicting widows and orphans from their homes, I'm now forced to spend the remainder of my "FREE" time replacing all violin tracks with cowbells.

(almost done with that, btw).

Cowbells rock. I don't know why I didn't think of this. I mean, David's work was okay, but THE COWBELLS F*&%ING ROCK!!!

Quick question: Think panning the cowbell tracks (all 4 of 'em) at 25 and 50 is too close, or should I hard pan 'em like I did the fiddle?

Thanks in advance for your well-reasoned response.

-chris

If you're gonna use four cowbells then I really think a 5.1 surround sound mix would be appropriate.

Oh for the love of...

Ya' know, pleasing you people is like trying to staple pancake batter to the ceiling: "TURN THE FIDDLE UP," "TAKE THE FIDDLE OUT," "MAKE THE SONG ABOUT COWS."

sheesh...

FYI - I have followed all of the helpful advice I've received here, and have posted a version that includes the following:

a) ONE friggin' fiddle;
b) one LOUD friggin' fiddle;
c) one LOUD friggin' fiddle panned at -15 ...never moving;
c) 4 tracks of nothing but cowbells, struck in alternate "surround sound" panning fashion in 1/16ths throughout the song;

BONUS - While I was incorporating all of your ideas, my 2 year old hit the "record" button and screamed "I GOT POO-POO PANTS!!" I thought it added a touch of class, so that's in there as well.

Thanks,
-chris

(seriously, I could use a level check on the violin)

This was a pleasure to listen to---I can't hear anything I'd change--Being raised partly by bugs bunny and friends-it brought back nice memories of childhood and beyond in suburban USA. Great collaboration-great song period---thx for the listen.
