Do you have an adjacent closet or room that you can put the computer into? Just run a few extension cables, keeping the keyboard and computer monitor in your recording room. You need a way to lose the computer fan/hard drive noise.

Forget the mics... how can I get that sound out of a guitar! Bitchen playing.

I purchased a pair of matched Peluso CEMC6 mics back in early May only to return them about a week later. The problem I had was with the noise level of the mics (and also a bad roll-off switch). I know the mics are spec'd at a self noise of 14dBA, but they were by far the noisiest mics in my collection (Kiwi, NTK, AKG 414, AKG C3000's, several Chinese condensers, and even my 57's and 58's). The noise was a mix of loud hiss (not environmental as all recording was done in an eerily quiet Whisperroom) and ground loop hum that was unique to these mics. My studio is properly grounded and none of my other mics/equipment show this problem. The hum would get extremely loud if you ran your finger over the pad switch w/out actually touching the mic. Very strange. Tried them through Great River, Grace, Aphex, The Brick, Mackie pre's all with the same results. I even took my Mackie 1604 over to my friends and sure enough, same thing. Then on one of the mics the roll off switch would make this loud crackly noise until you played around with it. Sound/tone-wise I thought they were very good -tried them on drum overheads and acoustic gtr. The noise issue was the deal killer though, so I ordered a matched pair of Gefell M300s which are scheduled to arrive Wed. Wasn't going post this info until I received the M300s (to compare), but since the topic is going, what the heck.

gneissday, there was a recent batch of resistors that were going in the CEMC6's that had some problems in some cases - mostly during May and part of June. The company that makes the resistors started using lead-free solder to comply with upcoming EU standards on manufacturing effective July 2006. Peluso discovered the problem and has since switched to Vishay Telefunken resistors in the CEMC6.

Some people have had noise problems with CEMC6's recently, and those mics have been replaced. Anyone who might have a problem with a noisy CEMC6 they bought in the last few months should contact their dealer and/or Peluso Microphones.

Other than that, the current CEMC6's with Vishay Telefunken resistors actually sound even better. None of the Peluso tube mics were affected by this, since they all have Vishay resistors since the beginning of production.

Dan,

Thanks for that update on the Peluso. I have (or should say 'had') what I thought was a noisy CEMC6 but it wasn't that bad, plus I was comparing it to a Gefell M930 which is darn quiet. I really like the mic so I was living with it. Then you posted this info. Now, here's why I am now a Peluso cheerleader - I sent an email to Peluso Labs (including my phone number) indicating the noise. I swear - within five minutes of sending the email, the phone rang. It was John Peluso. He is having me send the mic back just so he can look it over. This guy and his company are great, in my book!

Dan,
That is good info, and I hope it solves the noise issue. Like I said, I thought the mics sounded very good on the applications I tried. I was really hoping for a homerun with the Peluso's and it's unfortunate that I experienced this problem. Anyway, tell Doug from Soundpure thanks for assisting me with ordering the M300s (which I've used before and liked very much). I would like to hear from others who have the CEMC6's to see if they have any noise problems. For those who have the mics, maybe you can indicate when the mics were purchased as well.

I purchased these just two weeks ago. I will run some trouble-shooting to see if they contribute any substantial noise, but so far I don't think so.

I just ordered a pair of CEMC6's from sound pure today. The order don't ship till tomorrow.I sure hope that you removed the faulty mics from your stock.............thanks for the heads up gneissday.and I just happened on this thread woww!!!!!!!!this ain't my week for gear.

You're welcome billblues. If your mics don't have the noise issues, then I'm sure you will enjoy them. On another note, I received my M300s yesterday (a day early from UPS!) and they work fantastic. Unbelievably quiet and they sound great. Plus I like the stereo bar the kit comes with. It really makes setting up the mics easy (xy/ortf). I have used M300s in the past on acoustic gtr with great results, so I think this is the beginning of a beautiful relationship between my Taylor/Gibson acoustics and the M300s...

The MG M300 is indeed a great mic. Enjoy!

Well folks, these CEMC6 mics sound wonderful, but they aren't cutting it for me. I can't deal with the amount of noise I am getting with these. I tried different things to see what was up, and I am convinced that the mics are just noisy. I am trying to see if Sound Pure will let me return them and get a better mic from them. I gave them my best shot. Bummer!

The self noise spec for the CEMC6 is 14dB (A weighted). The Schoeps CMC6/MK4 and MG M294 mics that I own, as well as the Neumann KM184 mics I used to own, were all about 14dB. That's very quiet. So perhaps your mics are noiser than spec. I would suggest speaking with Dot and having them checked out. Perhaps you have a pair from the bad batch. Dunno, just a thought. Those mics sound very nice, BTW. You're going to have to spend more to get as good or better.

Ya, I emailed Todd at Sound Pure and he said they might be a bad batch that they were trying to fix. They were having problems associated with UPS rough handling. I don't know, I am a bit reluctant to try another pair, and I am considering just upgrading to a Gefell m930 which I hear is great for vocals as well as acoustic guitar. Just for fun, here is a sample of the Studio Projects C1 with the Avalon AD2022 preamp. Forgive me, I am very tired and I am a bit sloppy, and there are other noises, but I thought some of you might be interested in hearing the combo. I am using my Taylor 414 and steel finger picks.

And here is a recording of the AT4033 with the C1 on guitar:

I just want to make it clear, regarding the Peluso CEMC6 mics. I understand that the Peluso CEMC6 mics had some problems in the past that either need to needed to be fixed, but in no way does this reflect poorly on Sound Pure. They have been most helpful and professional in my business dealings and I recommend them to anyone, great bunch of folks!

Furthermore, I would still consider another pair of the CEMC6, as long as they are a good quiet pair. I just have some extra cash now and would prefer to upgrade to a different mic.

Just had to clear that up. Thanks!

I don't think the Josephson's would disappoint you. A lot of people on this board will advise against KM184, but I'm in the minority. They work for me. Earthworks are almost to die for. Schoeps and DPA *are* to die for. It's just the way the prices go, how much you want to spend. I think higher end small diaphragms are one area where spending more money simply yields results.-Richie

Actually, yes! Although yours is nice, there is alot of noise. I can hear it alot at the end after you stop playing. The guitar effects sound nice, but not a raw acoustic sound. There is some other noise I hear also, but can't make it out. Why? What is your signal chain?

Waking up an old thread, anyone else had noise problems? I can't audition the mics... And I need something super quiet.

Thanks
Adam
