Just wondering...I want to get some effect pedals for my guitar, a delay, maybe distortion, wawa...and maybe more along the line. What I'm wondering is if it's a better idea to build up a collection from an assortment of pedals, or go for one of those boss compilation effect pedal thing... I'm wondering for both the actually quality and whether it could save me any money.
 
Well this is just me but I've never heard a processor that sounded as good as a Cry Baby, so in that department your better off going for the pedal there.

As far as the rest it depends on a few things. Do you play more live or in a studio? What is your budget and what sound are you looking for?

This is just me, but live pedals are easier to deal with. But in the studio with the exception of the wah I use processors.
 
I asked this same question as a part of a post just recently and had some good points made...look here , especially toward the bottom, and folks made some really good points about the advantages of both.

Hope it helps! By the by, I have a Boss ME-30 and I do really like it, but I will probably start accumulating some other pedals as time goes on for the flexibility.
 
Live pedals are more of what I'm going for. I want a loop effects pedal for sure, and i was thinking of a chorus pedal like the dan electro cool cat or something, and then i wanted something to muddy the sound up a bit. I dont know if i should get a distortion pedal. Maybe you would know of something that would just thicken it up a bit?
 
A fuzz pedal will muddy it up, or just an overdrive pedal if you just want to thicken it a bit.
 
Well, not too many combo pedals have good loops.

I use a combo pedal, but it's just because I'm poor/cheap/lazy. Lots of stomp boxes are nice and give you better effects, but they make a hurting on the pocketbook. Also, it can be a pretty big pain to haul around all of those cables and power supplies. If you get a buncha boxes, it's a good idea to build yourself some sort of rack.
 
Stomp boxes are the way to go. Seriously, unless you NEED more than a couple stomp boxes and you just CANT buy them at once. Okay, settle. But if you have any real choice, go with the stomp boxes. You will be much happier.
 
I`ve used prossesors for many years, and I chnaged to stomp boxes 2 years ago, never looked back.
Get some classics like cry baby big muff and a good delay pedal and your set to go.

how ever if you were to go for a prossesor, I`d go with Boss gx700.
it probbaly cheap now.
 
check out the Ibanez UE series (late 70ies early 80ies) on harmony central and e-bay ...

I have nearly all of them (ue300, ue400, ue405) - and its literally tone heaven ... all analog, 100% japanese, rack mounted and can be had for reasonable prices (tho they have been climbing steeply in the past year or so - as word is already out)

YOU WILL NEVER LOOK BACK!!!

I've got a PUE-5, plus some other stuff - Black Finger, AutoQ, Morley volume. The PUE-5 is pretty cool.
 
beware the dano cool cat pedal! it runs on either 2 batteries, or a special 18v adaptor. crazy....

I definitely prefer stand alone pedals...multi effect units tend to be jacks of all trades but masters of none.

however, in my current setup i'm using both. I'm using a boss line selector to switch between my chain of stand alone pedals and a multi effects processor with some sick and twisted custom patches...best of both worlds i guess, but i still prefer single function pedals with many tweakable knobs...
