Peavey XXX - holy feedback batman

I had the displeasure of gigging with a XXX last night and had ridiculous feedback issues with my nicer ibanez (added full shielding) and a borrowed gibson les paul studio. I was using the amp mostly on channel two with the gain and volume halfway up. I did not even attempt to the use the ultra channel. MY sig chain was guitar ->monster cable-> boss tu-2 - > monster cable -> amp ->speaker cable -> 4x12 xxx cab. What gives? Are all of these amps like this? I might have to gig with it again soon and was wondering if anybody had any tips. I figured I might bring a noise suppressor along on Friday.
 
yeah and i was standing about ten feet away with my back to the amp.
 
Eh.. throw a boss noise suppressor in there and call it a day.
 
Yeah, I have had the displeasure of assualting my ears with the triple X as well.

I don't get it, because I think the peavey 6505 is a great amp (with the gain way down). And I have actually started warming up to the valve king as of late.

One thing with both the triple X and the 6505. They advertise it as "More gain then you will ever need". The reality is it is "To much gain that is unusable".

The key with the 6505 and the valve king is to keep the gain no higher the 10 o'clock. Above that it is pure fizz.

The triple X I tried was just pure fizz regardless. Maybe I tried a bad one but it was absolutely awfull to my ears.

I have a Mesa Mark IV and A Dual Rectifier Roadking. The Road King also suffers from the more gain then is usable disease, but that doesn't kick in till after 2 o'clock on Modern, 3 o'clock on vintage. On raw the whole thing is usable.

Here's a few things I'd try at sound check (you did sound check, right?)

Adjust the gain on the amp.

Turn the volume down on the amp. (the FOH sound guy will thank you for this)

Put some mids in your EQ so the sound cuts through better at lower volume

What I wouldn't do is set everything to where YOU THINK it's "supposed" to sound good, not make any adjustments, and then bitch because it sounded like ass.
 
I suggest you go over to the Peavey forum and ask this question there. I'm sure someone will be able to help you. I have a Classic 30 and everyone has been helpful when I needed some advice.
 
Yeah, we sound checked on the day of about 2 hours before our set started. We heard the feedback then but decided I would just roll off the volume during the quiet parts. We didn't know it would feedback while merely holding the strings in a muted position:eek:. The band I'm filling in with is a modern rock band doing originals that require moderate gain...think uhhh nickelback "animals" type stuff. I had some time alone with the XXX recently and I have come to the conclusion that these amps are feedback prone in general. The xxx can't be run at 1/4 or 1/8 volume...it doesn't sound good on stage and it doesn't sound good when mic'd through the pa. Thankfully this is a loaner for my time with this band. Those of you who read my posts from a while back know I was using a road king and was pissed off at the the unnecessary amounts of buttons and options. Well one thing I can say is that, that amp was dreamy compared to this. You don't know whatchya got till it's gone (or repossessed by the original owner!!! haha). I can't complain because I'm using these amps for free =). But I digress. The xxx makes some good tones and I think it's great overall, but the feedback is tough to deal with. It's all gravy though, got the noise suppressor from now on out and it does help.

Bottom line...I need a better amp for this project. I have about 600 dollars american to work with. What do we think.

I own a Road King and I love it. However I get were you are coming from with all the buttons and switches.

I was saving up for a Roadster which is the waterdown version of the roadking, but I just had an incredible deal fall in my lap on the Roadking.

I do like being able to switch between EL34's on one channel and 6L6's on another.

But that is definately a nice to have and not a need to have.

If I had to get another one I would go the way of the Roadster unless another killer deal on a Roadking came around

Ahh, there you go.

Even channel 2 on an XXX has an ABSURD amount of gain on tap, I briefly played through one with my Universe, and had to keep the crunch gain in the 2-3 range to keep it from blowing up on me. It's just way too saturated...

Your pickups are micrphonic. They need to be potted. It might also be a tone issue, too much high end. But changing the tone doesn't change the fact that your pickups are microphonic and need to fixed.

The ibanez has seymour duncan/ibanez pickups in it (stock on the ibanez sz-720). The LP has the stock gibsons in it. So, maybe..but the pickups in the gibby aren't mine to change. The ibanez however-- I've wanted to change the bridge to something better for a while. Maybe a zebra duncan distortion. :cool:

I'm finishing the rest of these shows out with a noise suppressor in my chain and then hopefully I'm done with it. The amp is too noisy for me. Thanks for the replies.
