peavey radial pro's and bent tension rods..

What does THIS button do?
My dad has a set of radial pros and they are kick ass.. but it seems that some of the tension rods are bent. What would cause this? Is it possible that too much tension would cause them to bend, due to the fact that the lugs don't have any relief (they are mounted solid in the radial bridge) as opposed to normal mounting which has a spring and a little bit of play for the lug to move around?
Does anyone have a radial pro on here and has had similar problems?
We are going to replace them but I'd like to know what caused it so we can keep it from happening in the future..
