Peavey 5150

Does anyone use a 5150? I've never had the pleasure of playing through one, but I just bought a 5150 combo. It was only $400 so I couldn't pass it up. But I don't pick it up until this weekend. So in the meantime I've been reading some reviews, most of which were positive but some complained about a loud hiss and a poor clean channel. Tell me I made a good purchase (so I can convince the wife).
 
Tell the wife, you made a good purchase.

The peavey 5150's, while ive never been a fan of the combo's, the halfstacks/stacks are absolutly AMAZING.. You can get extremly loud, while retaining tone.

They rarely break too ;) I have a old 5150 head that i have BEAT on, its fell down FLIGHTS of stairs, knocked knobs off, busted tubes, and it still keeps on running strong.

I suspect the same quailty from the combo.

a music store near me had a 5150 combo for a long time, i tried it out a few times and i did notice that it was kinda noisy. had some cool distortion tones too, i don't think this is an amp someone would buy with the intention of playing it clean. when you crank it loud enough, the noise isn't really an issue while playing. they also had a Traynor YCV40 at the same shop, which i actually liked a little bit better. i ended up buying a YCV80 elsewhere for the same price they were asking for the YCV40. :D :cool:

zed32 - how much was the music store asking for the 5150? I'm just curious since I didn't have a lot of time to research what kind of deal I was getting (I tend to make a lot of impulse buys w/o research). I play mainly heavier music, so I'm not super concerned about the clean channel...but it would be nice.
 
If you're in it for rock or metal tones, the 5150 is tits.
I use a 5150 II often and I love it.
Yeah, the clean channel is not spectacular, but it's not that bad.
If you don't get crazy with the gain, (and the 5150 has a ton) the noise isn't a big problem either. I don't find it any noisier than other high gain amps I've used.

i don't remember exactly, but i'm pretty sure it was a lot more than $400. i think they wanted like $699 for it used or something like that. that store overcharges for all of their guitar gear though. :o

you wouldn't need pedals with a 5150 unless you want a specific sound i guess. the distortion you get from the amp itself is killer.
 
Well, the distortion sounds great on it's own, but occasionally I do use an overdrive out front for a clean boost when recording. No gain, just to get a hotter signal because it tightens up the low end and adds some definition.
I do that with any tube amp these days because I really like the result.
 
congrats... excellent metal amp.

I almost always use an OD up front for tone and bottom shaping
 
If you are into amp circuits, the original 5150 has a lot of similarities with the Soldano SLO amp which everybody wanted at the time the 5150 came out. The factory biasing on 5150 amps is usually biased far too cold so the amp can be made to sound beyond AMAZING and less buzzy if you know your way around the inside of a tube amp.
 
Damn, you guys were right. The 5150 is music to my ears! After playing for so many years through amp modelers and such, it's great to finally crank up a real tube amp.
 
Before Eddie left peavey, they had a few things in the works. I remember seeing "Coming soon" in thier catalog.

A 3/4 sized wolfgang

and a 30 watt version of the 5150 combo with the knobs on the front. I was bummed when it never came to pass. There were pictures of it in the catalog like it was in the works.
 
the 5150 is the best sounding amp i have ever owned. the gain is amazing, unfortunately i lost it in the house fire 2 years ago and replaced it with a Warhead......i miss my 5150, althought i love my Warhead
